Self-custody is a fundamental principle when dealing with Bitcoin, and hardware wallets have become established as the most popular solution to secure coins while (somewhat) maintaining their accessibility. Thus it is important to highlight common pitfalls that erode the security of the setup, or increase the risk of losing the funds by accident.
Instead of talking about theory only, creating a real setup with a BitBox02 hardware wallet will give workshop participants a better grasp on how general important self-custody best practices can be implemented in the real world.
This is a draft the actual presentation will be planned at a later point in time.
- Talk about why hardware wallets.
- Setup a BB02 hardware wallet single signature (Segwit/Wrapped-Segwit/Taproot) with and without passphrase, talk about BIP32 passphrases a bit.
- Send and receive (testnet?) coins using the setup, talk about security pitfalls e.g. not validating the transaction data on the device screen and so on.
- Using the BB02 with advanced wallets (Sparrow or Electrum)
- Talk a bit about mutlisig setups, risks and use cases (you probably don’t need a multisig)
- Demo miniscript using BB02 and Liana wallet (basically this blog post: https://bitbox.swiss/blog/exploring-bitcoin-miniscript-with-liana-and-the-bitbox02/)
When planning the actual presentation I might add or remove some of this but this is the general direction the workshop is going to follow.
In 2020 while studying in Germany, Nico discovered Bitcoin and attended the Adopting Bitcoin conference in El Salvador, a trip that inspired him to move there.
