Nostr and Bitcoin lightning have made possible a ‘pay-as-go patreon’ style system, where the customer pays for each item with a micropayment. We have seen Value4Value applications that allow tipping for podcasts using bitcoin lighting, but revenues have been modest so far. People are lazy and often just can't be bothered to part with their precious bitcoin unless they have to. We think that the solution is gated content, where the customer has to make a bitcoin lightning payment in order to access the content.
As a decentralised communication system with Bitcoin zaps, Nostr is the perfect protocol on which to develop a payment system for content where a creator can monetise and build a following at the same time. We are new Nostr client called FanFares which gives the creator the option to gate content behind a lightning payment wall. Initially we are focused on delivering this solution for podcasts, but we plan to extend to video and written text in the future.
