Revolutionizing Grid Management: Leveraging EDGE DERMS and Bitcoin Lightning to Unlock Customer Flexibility
2024-11-15 , Finney Stage

With the rise in renewable energy and electricity demand, utilities need innovative ways to manage grid stability. OSED offers a modular EDGE DERMS platform that leverages customer assets—like electric vehicles and batteries—to provide grid flexibility. By integrating the Bitcoin Lightning Network using LNBits, OSED enables real-time rewards in Bitcoin for users who adjust their energy usage. The platform employs open-source tools and supports advanced functions like load coordination and peer-to-peer energy trading. This talk will demonstrate how OSED orchestrates customer assets and incentivizes flexibility, paving the way for more resilient and dynamic energy systems.

OSED is a platform that offers a highly modular EDGE DERMS for utilities. OSED allows the deployment of custom grid functions that fulfill local grid needs. The grid functions tackle well known grid problems as the power peaks produced either in normal conditions or after electricity cuts (using direct load control or demand response incentives). The grid functions could be rewarded using the Bitcoin Lightning Network. Thus, whenever the utility requires flexibility that users can provide (for example, discharging electric batteries or electric vehicles or simply reducing their consumption), the users could be paid directly in Bitcoin for their contributions to the grid needs. Moreover, OSED supports advanced grid functions like the coordination of controllable loads (like Electric Vehicle recharge) or even local flexibility markets that can run as well using the Bitcoin Lightning Network. So, not only users can sell electricity back to the grid (either megawatts or negawatts) but they can also trade energy among themselves using bitcoin.

The way OSED works is that it deploys EDGE DERMS Coordinators who expose APIs to upper control systems, like aggregators, virtual power plants, or even utility DERMS. OSED deploys as well the building actuators and building intelligence systems that control the loads on the buildings. OSED leverages open-source projects, such as LnBits, Home Assistant and EdgeX, Docker, and Kubernetes, allowing it to be cloud and hardware-agnostic.
