At Bitcoin Africa Story, we see every act of education, merchant onboarding, storytelling, or community program as a form of Proof of Work for adoption.
This talk reframes Proof of Work as not only a technical mechanism, but a human principle—showing how anyone can contribute, whether by orange-pilling family members, teaching kids, onboarding merchants, or empowering vulnerable groups. Adoption grows when people put in the work.
Much of the global conversation on Proof of Work is narrowly focused on mining and energy debates. While mining secures the Bitcoin network, Proof of Work also represents something more fundamental: the truth that lasting value comes from putting in the effort.
This session explores Proof of Work as both a technical design and a social principle. Just as miners commit energy to protect the blockchain, individuals and communities commit their own “work” to protect and expand adoption. In Africa, we see this clearly: grassroots projects, education programs, and community initiatives continue to spring up, each one powered by people dedicating their time, creativity, and energy to make Bitcoin real in everyday life.
At Bitcoin Africa Story, we call this Proof of Adoption Work—the idea that spreading Bitcoin knowledge, orange-pilling family members, onboarding merchants, or teaching vulnerable groups is itself verifiable proof of effort. Each action, no matter how small, strengthens Bitcoin’s reach and resilience.
By sharing real-world examples from across Africa, this talk will highlight how Proof of Work beyond mining is fueling a movement. It demonstrates that Bitcoin adoption isn’t abstract or distant: it’s built step by step by ordinary people putting in the work. Attendees will leave inspired to see their own contributions as part of Bitcoin’s living Proof of Work.

Destiny Smart is the founder of Bitcoin Africa Story, a Bitcoin-only organization dedicated to advancing grassroots education and adoption across Africa. As an educator, writer, marketer, and brand strategist, he is committed to making Bitcoin accessible, practical, and relevant for everyday people.
With his skills and dedication, Destiny has collaborated with and contributed to several grassroots Bitcoin projects and organizations, including Blink Wallet, BitFitness, Bitcoin Kids, and more. He has showcased real-world Bitcoin use cases—ranging from onboarding merchants to running community-led initiatives such as the free 7-week Bitcoin Diploma, storytelling projects, and community-building efforts. His work emphasizes Bitcoin’s role in fostering financial inclusion, resilience, and innovation in underserved communities.
