We must develop strategies for thriving when the state fails, but also when the state does not fail - when it deploys malicious power effectively.


This talk will show how even weak and incompetent states can mount sustained and effective attacks on productive society, explain Sakeliga's strategy to deal with these attacks, look at lessons in this from Bitcoin, and challenge the Bitcoin community to embrace and cultivate alternative centres of authority and power to check the designs of the total state.

Russell Lamberti is Executive Director and Chief Economist at Sakeliga, an independent, non-profit business organisation in South Africa.

He leads economic strategy and policy analysis, advancing the group’s mission to restore economic order at scale amid harmful economic policies and state failure. He also heads Sakeliga’s premium funder relations and contributes to various executive functions.

Lamberti is a UCT School of Economics graduate with over 20 years of experience advising fund managers, professional investors, and corporate boards. He previously held economist and macro-strategy roles at Econometrix, ETM Analytics, and as founder of ETM Macro Advisors.

He co-authored When Money Destroys Nations in 2014, a book about Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation and economic collapse.
