DESCRIPTION:The Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaboration (TVS) f
or the Vera C. Rubin \nLegacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) includes a s
trikingly wide-range of researchers\nand interest topics\, from exoplanets
to stellar variability of all kinds through to\nextra-galactic transients
such as Tidal Disruption Events. As a result\, the community\nalso prese
nts a wide range of requirements and challenges for the software tools nee
ded\nto accomplish these science goals. TVS has an active Software Group
that aims to\nfacilitate the development of the necessary tools and to pro
vide training opportunities\nin key technologies.\n\nTVS's groups for tran
sient phenomena\, ranging from microlensing to flares to \nsupernovae\, ar
e working with the developers of several brokers to produce filtered\naler
t streams to identify their targets of interest. Meanwhile\, groups inter
ested in\nlarge-scale population analyses\, or the detection of new stella
r associations are\ninvestigating optimal ways to perform very large catal
og queries and/or bulk image\nanalysis. TVS' group searching for optical
counterparts of gravitational wave or\nneutrino detections are collaborati
ng closely with Rubin project to establish protocols\nfor Rubin to perform
a limited number of Target of Opportunity overrides.\n\nThe Science Colla
boration is also the recipient of a number of directable software\ncontrib
utions under Rubin's International In Kind program. These projects are \n
undertaken collaboratively to provide tools and services of general intere
st to TVS\nmembers.\n\nI will review ongoing software development efforts
relating to TVS and In Kind \ncontributions.
