Bitcoin is difficult. Bitcoin Mining and the intersection with energy grids even more so. I would like to give everyone a basic overview of what Bitcoin Mining is and how it works. I think, with the focus of freedom focus of the conference, explaining how anybody can turn natural energy resources available to them into the hardest currency ever known to man, is an important feature. Additionally, I would like to present the GAMA Seed program and the resources that GAMA (Green African Mining Alliance) is offering. The Seed Program is a way for newcomers to get started. Once you apply and your circumstances make sense you have access to refurbished hardware way below cost to get started mining. Along with this comes education around the technical details and economic side of the business.

Including how western influence robs Africans of monetary value via debasement and inflation, how mining and centralized farming strip Africans of their economic labor, and how war is perpetuated in large part due to monetary distortion. Bitcoin is a potential solution to combat all of these problems and give a boost to all charitable and humanitarian efforts simultaneously for extremely low cost.

This will enable them to keep operating, collecting member contributions and building a constructive and functional society, even in the face of state collapse.

Anatomy of a Bitcoin Transaction

Attendees will learn about bitcoin transaction basics first and foremost.

However, there will be progression towards deeper technical topics such that folks who are already familiar with the basics can gain a more fundamental and/or reinforced understanding. I will react to the audience's technical level to see how deep to go...

If you're a software engineer recently learning about bitcoin or just a casual tech-savvy Bitcoin OpTech reader, this talk is made specifically to help level up your understanding of how bitcoin transactions work.

---- Is there anything folks should read up on before they attend this talk?

Murch has done at least 2 amazing talks on bitcoin transactions in the past so will be building off things like this:

Education is in a crisis in South Africa. The disparity between the education quality provided by private schools and government schools is bigger than ever before and bright students of underprivileged backgrounds are unable to reach their true potential simply because of the quality of education available to them. Crew for a Cause is a South African education charity that works with exceptional high school students who cannot afford a quality education. They place them in top quality schools and provide mentorship throughout their high school career. They have introduced a Bitcoin policy which seeks to incentivize exceptional academic performance, by providing each student in their program with a Bitcoin wallet at the start of their high school career, which the charity allocates Bitcoin too on an annual basis. Should these students graduate high school and reach pre-defined KPI's then the Bitcoin wallet becomes available to them, so that they have a nest egg to start their professional life or tertiary education with.

Finding Purpose through the 100 Day Bitcoin Challenge

When I lost my job earlier this year, I knew it was a sign to go into Bitcoin full-time. I didn't know where to start, how to measure success and how to help Bitcoin adoption. My solution? A personal challenge to be the catalyst for 1 Bitcoin interaction per day for 100 days. I defined an interaction as Bitcoin moving addresses between two entities (myself, a friend, a family member, a stranger, etc).

Soon enough I realized sitting in front of my computer wasn't cutting it, I had to get out and take Bitcoin to the people. The 'Bitcoin whiteboard' was born. I wrote different Bitcoin messages hoping to spark conversations on the streets of Calgary.

This was just the beginning, I released my visual notes for free, launched two books, onboarded three businesses, presented why businesses should adopt Bitcoin as a form of payment in local meetups, started a Bitcoin Treasure hunt, and helped 2 farmers DIY their node.

This challenge changed my life. It forced me to get out of my comfort zone, I learned about myself, Bitcoin and how others perceive it. Through the process, I've realized Bitcoin is my ikigai (sense of purpose). To top it off, my wife who had spent a decade in Microsoft selling Azure started viewing the world with an orange lens. Witnessing my journey through the challenge had a profound effect on her.

Now, we are on a Bitcoin pilgrimage around the world to continue learning the Bitcoin way, enable Bitcoin as a form of payment through education, and spark curiosity in one student at a time!

One Shot Replace-By-Fee-Rate

Transaction pinning has been a longstanding concern, particularly BIP-125 Rule #3 pinning, where a large, low fee-rate, transaction prevents the confirmation of a small, high fee-rate, transaction. While replace-by-fee-rate has been long known to be a solution for Rule #3 pinning, it has been thought to have unavoidable DoS attacks and incentive issues.

Here we will show that a variant, One-Shot Replace-By-Fee-Rate, fixes these DoS attacks and miner incentives sufficiently well to be implementable in Bitcoin Core. We'll discuss how One-Shot Replace-By-Fee-Rate works, why it fixes transaction pinning, and what implications it has for DoS attacks and miner incentives.

Fostering bitcoin communities

Key Themes

1) Introduction - How we started Bitcoin4India and other African Bitcoin communities.

2) Our learnings and insights - (a) Everyone gets drawn to the shitcoin casino first. (b) The journey from shitcoin to bitcoin-only is interesting to say the least. Some get it in an instant, many take much longer. (c) Use the platforms that people like to use. In our case it has been Whatsapp and Meetup.com. (d) Be gentle on no-coiners. Meet them where they are. (e) People wanting to self-organize meetups and events is a win.

3) Similarities between India and Africa - Both are vibrant cultures comprising of several sub-cultures, customs and traditions. People have strong ties with their family and community. Its easy for an Indian to understand the term pan-Africanism. Its easy for us to understand the concept of Ubuntu.

4) Differences between Indian and African climate - (a) Africa could be the best example of slowly then suddenly - (b) The need of bitcoin is not felt in India yet, but its a burning need in Africa due to inflation, currency devaluation and censorship. (c) Africa needs bitcoin solutions made by Africans.

Conclusion: (a) Its about making people feel welcome into the community. (b) The west's narratives around bitcoin won't necessarily work in/for Africa. Africa needs to have its own bitcoin narrative. (c) Momentum is key to building a community. (d) Give people various platforms - online and off, if sustained and nurtured well, the community starts growing organically.

Bitcoin and Free Private Cities

Focus is specifically on the model of Free Private Cities as developed by dr. Titus Gebel: Special Administrative Zones that have the specific feature of being operated by a private company to maximise profits by satisfying resident-consumer wants. The governance itself is by a for profit corporation that has extensive legal and regulatory autonomy (negotiated with the host-nation) to direct the nature and interaction of the city, both internal and external.
Profit is the proof that society’s most urgent needs are served. This mechanism directs the allocation of resources to the wants and needs of society. Private money, of which BTC is superior, is key to this.
Freedom is something that you build
The core principle would be voluntary participation. A legal framework is developed to keep people accountable for their voluntary commitments in order to protect property rights of others.
This decentralization is inevitable and eventually networks of FPCs will form into leagues. This will include more abstract communities/fraternities/societies established with no geographical constraints but actualised by the jurisdictions afforded by different FPCs.
In a FPC, fractional reserve banking will be seen as fraudulent, favouring private money like BTC which:
Reduce negative effects of the business cycle
Gives access to monetary network without censorship
Reduce unbanked population
Offers a permissionless monetary network allowing FPCs to trade globally.
Reduce the unbanked population.
Other implications/features of a city/society built on sound money, property rights and voluntary commitments:
Superior price discovery
Individual freedoms
Stronger superorganisms of institutions, fraternities, societies
Beauty
Better architecture, urbanism and quality of life.

I am a regenerative farmer in the KZN midlands. We raise chickens, cattle and goats and sell all our products direct to consumer.
Adopting a bitcoin standard has made some significant changes in the way we run the farm and make decisions about the future.
My goal is to share this experience with other South African farmers in the hope that it may impact their farm, and management decisions, positively. Why Bitcoin and Beef?

There is, however, a deeper aspect to what we have experienced in our farming business. When we lowered our time preference, we started engaging with the land, and the ecosystem as a whole, in a way we had not beed able to before.

Understanding Why Bitcoin, Not Crypto

The difference between Bitcoin and all other cryptocurrencies is stark and glaringly obvious to those who have dedicated time to properly understand the distinction or who aren't otherwise conflicted.

Traditionally, VCs had to make a numerous investments and if they were lucky, they would be successful on a small number of them that would IPO or be sold in a private equity deal. For that, you needed a real business with product market fit. Crypto however has provided a panacea for VCs. No longer do they need to create a viable businesses. All they they need is an idea with a crypto token and a lot of marketing dollars.

Properly understood, crypto represents liquid venture capital equity tokens largely owned and promoted by a central leadership team with mark-to-market pricing and 24/7 liquidity. However, unlike regulated capital markets, crypto projects are not required to make any material disclosure relating to shareholding, paid partnerships or other interests that typically would be disclosed.

This is what makes crypto vastly different to Bitcoin. Crypto is best viewed as akin to a share/stock, whereas Bitcoin is best understood as a digital commodity. Increasingly, regulators have made that distinction including the biggest capital market on earth, the United States.

The wallet is very suitable for emerging markets like LATAM and Africa. I'm Ben Van Hool, the COO of JAN3 and know Hermann from Ekasi. While talking we came up with the idea to talk at your event.

I'm currently also talking to Transfrontier Africa (transfrontierafrica.org) to look into Bitcoin. The founder and director Craig Spencer is a friend of me. I could try to get him announce that they will start using Bitcoin with AQUA.

AQUA will be a non-custodial wallet with on-chain BTC and Liquid BTC and Liquid USDt. We will also allow send/receive to Lightning through a Liquid swap. This is a trade-off because in the end the user has a non-custodial wallet which is very easy to use and no need for managing a node or balancing channels.

I think the story of AQUA + adoption by an organization like Transfrontier Africa would be a nice story to bring. Craig Spencer could be an additional speaker on stage.

What if we built a decentralized tool kit to create an Unstoppable, permissionless p2p marketplace so anyone could trade anything with anyone. This is what Satoshi would have wanted and what he did not have time to do.
First, they weren't going after the biggest problem. No one needs to sell slippers or pez dispensers on a decentralized marketplace using bitcoin. That's a lot of work to do something most people can do elsewhere. The real killer app is OTC. A p2p marketplace for all forms of money, any currency, any payment method anywhere.
Second, making a marketplace scale takes a lot more than just a bulletin board and a payment with condition. For it to reach the world and serve honest business people there are three ancillary services that are needed. Each of them is even harder than the marketplace itself.

1. P2P dispute resolution. A decentralized court system is no easy task and is possibly harder than Bitcoin itself, but people need recourse in case of disputes.
2. Decentralized Identity. KYC is ugly, broken and centralized but KYP, know your peer is an absolute necessity to make reputation work and keep a marketplace clear of bad actors. Getting this to work demands an oracle marketplace and a gradient of community review, an immense challenge but needed. Purely optional and all at the discretion of peers.
3. A stable form of value during trades. The volatility of bitcoin makes trade preferable with something stable. A stable form of private credits is needed to facilitate trades.

Imagine we lifted all barriers. This is why we Called it Civ Kit, a decentralized open source protocol of Civilization 2.0 The kernel of governance in code built around Bitcoin.

How Can We Underthrow Government?

Right now, governments dominate the world. How can we move towards a more peaceful, voluntary global society with prosperity for all? Certainly Bitcoin is a big part of the solution - as Bitcoin replaces fiat currencies governments will not be able to finance aggression through fiat currencies. But at the same time, we can accelerate the creation of voluntary systems of governance, community, education, health care, and more. As more of the world's talent and capital transition from government systems of domination to peaceful voluntaryism, we will in effect be "underthrowing" governments. Just as electronic communications and private delivery services such as UPS, FedEx, etc. have made government post offices irrelevant, as we create private voluntary systems the remaining government functions will be as irrelevant to life as are the post offices - or the Queen of England - expensive, decorative, wastes.

Bitcoin gives you the Keys to your own Kingdom

In Namibia, I've found it beneficial to firstly, "Meet people where they are" & to secondly, engage about the use cases that will spark their curiosity, instead of confusing or alienating them with technical jargon.

My initial step has always been a conversation, one that leads to discovering a use-case that Bitcoin can help solve, or a worry it can help alleviate. It starts with a conversation because Bitcoin isn’t about Me & the countless hours of Proof of Work I have, it’s about how it makes the life of the person I’m speaking to better/easier than it has been… It’s about solutions to real life problems, today.

Regardless if you’re the Cleaner, Car Guard, Chef or the CEO, the conversation allows for us both to meet each other at a point of understanding instead of “indoctrination” & to build from there. Price doesn’t matter as much once people start thinking in terms of global purchasing power & how their use cases have been addressed.

Once you introduce that people can earn Bitcoin & not just buy it, there's a shift in most conversations. Especially once I show the person I’m speaking to how they can purchase something as vital today as Mobile Airtime with Bitcoin they earned, doing something as simple as playing games on that very phone.

For someone from The West, 600 or 3000 Sats people earn from watching adverts mid-game; writing reviews on products & services; listening to podcasts; creating content; etc… might be cents, but for many Africans those Sats stack up in terms of local currency allowing for the purchase of things like Mobile Airtime yes, but also food & entertainment, while opening doors to entrepreneurial endeavours for the person who earned the Bitcoin & can now hold the keys to their own kingdom.

Bitcoin adoption from the Philippines to El Salvador: the HODL paradox

We will spend four weeks in the Philippines with our project, Bitcoin Explorers. Just as we have done in the recent past with the Bitcoin communities of El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Turkey, and Lebanon, we will tell the world what is happening in the Bitcoin Islands using our key take, always focused on Bitcoin as a tool for financial inclusion and protection of human rights and individual freedoms around the world.
The speech I propose, similar to those I have brought to prestigious international conferences such as the Baltic Honeybadger, the PlanB Forum in Lugano and the Surfin' Bitcoin in Biarritz, will be enriched by photographic material taken on-site and experiences gathered firsthand.

Circumventing Financial Sanctions with Bitcoin

My husband (Hermann Vivier, Founder of Bitcoin Ekasi) and I have been operating Unravel Surf Travel since 2011. I am Russian. We met in Amsterdam in 2008, while studying. With South Africa being such a well-developed tourism destination, yet largely absent from the rapidly expanding Russian tourism market at that time, going into tourism and marketing South Africa in my native country, was an easy choice.

In 2014 conflict first escalated between Russia and Ukraine and international financial sanctions were first used against Russia. That's when we faced the prospect of being financially separated from our clients for the first time. As a result, we started accepting payments in Bitcoin in 2015. Fortunately, my husband had already been studying Bitcoin since 2013, so accepting it as payment (on the odd occasion) was pretty straightforward. Rather ironically the first clients to ever pay us in Bitcoin were Ukrainians, not Russians.

Those sanctions were however not nearly as devastating as the ones that followed in 2022 when Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine. Between 2015 and early 2022, a small minority of payments were made in Bitcoin, as most people could still access international payments. From February 2022 onwards, however, the vast majority of our payments have been received using Bitcoin.

Flipping the business from majority fiat to majority Bitcoin was not a small adjustment. But it was manageable because we were prepared.

It is important to understand that this can happen to anyone. The international financial system is increasingly being weaponised to punish governments, regardless of whether the citizens of that country (and other countries) deserve to suffer.

The Age of Open Protocols

Open protocols, characterized by their publicly accessible specifications and lack of proprietary control, have been instrumental in creating a level playing field for developers and companies alike. This openness has spurred creativity, allowing for the development of a wide range of applications and services that operate seamlessly across different networks and devices. The success of email protocols like SMTP, web protocols like HTTP, and file transfer protocols like FTP are prime examples of how open standards can drive universal adoption and interoperability.

The latest addition to this stack is Bitcoin, a digital currency that enhances the open protocol landscape with its decentralized approach. Bitcoin extends the benefits of open protocols to digital finance, offering a secure and transparent platform for transactions.

Overcoming Barriers to Bitcoin Adoption in Africa

As the world embraces the era of digital currencies and decentralized finance, Africa stands at the forefront of the next financial revolution. Bitcoin, the pioneering crypto, holds tremendous potential to transform the financial landscape of the continent, providing an opportunity for mass adoption and promoting financial inclusion. However, numerous barriers hinder the widespread acceptance of Bitcoin in Africa.

This presentation aims to shed light on the critical challenges hindering Bitcoin adoption in Africa and proposes effective strategies to overcome these obstacles. The first section will delve into the lack of awareness and understanding of cryptocurrencies among the general public and highlight the need for robust education campaigns to demystify the technology.
Moreover, the State continues to oppose the technology due to fear of losing control. However, we must ignore the State, which is bound for extinction, and focus on building parallel institutions that champion decentralization and Bitcoin's inherent freedom.

The next segment is Scams as a Hindering Factor, which will examine the prevalence of scams and fraudulent activities in the space and their impact on public trust. It will highlight common scams and tactics used to exploit individuals lacking awareness.

The final part will propose measures and educational initiatives to empower users to distinguish between legitimate projects and scams. The need to engage those who influence public opinion and policy to do a better job of understanding the technology is crucial.

Blink X BTCPayServer Workshop

In our mission at Blink to enhance the Bitcoin payment experience, we've identified a common hurdle: the complexity of leveraging Lightning transactions for merchants using BTCPay Server. Running a Lightning Node or depending on third-party, often hobbyist custodians has been a significant barrier, especially for non-technical users. To address this, we've collaborated with the BTCPay Server team to create a seamless solution – the Blink Plugin. Simple, powerful, and integrated: the Blink Plugin connects your Blink account to BTCPay Server, sidestepping the need for a Lightning Node. It’s all about making Lightning payments straightforward and accessible.

Key Benefits:
Hassle-Free Management: Ditch the complexity of running a Lightning Node. The Blink Plugin is custodial, handling liquidity management for you. It's simple: connect your Blink account to BTCPay Server and manage Lightning payments with ease. No technical deep dives needed.

Stable Value with Stablesats: Worried about Bitcoin's volatility? Choose Stablesats in Blink and tie the value of your sats to the US Dollar. This feature lets you receive payments in a stable value form, giving you peace of mind and financial stability in a fluctuating market.

Lightning Payments for All: We're tearing down technical barriers to make Lightning payments accessible to everyone. It doesn’t matter if you're new to Bitcoin or a seasoned merchant; the Blink Plugin is designed for easy adoption, expanding the reach of Lightning payments across the community.
