I am a Norwegian student of International Relations (Universitat Ramon Llull, Blanquerna in Barcelona), specializing in International Political Economy. This semester I am interning in the research unit at SMEX, where my main task is to develop a research about Big Tech data center infrastructure in the MENA region.

Alex is a data and database nerd who is passionate about knowledge sharing and building systems that amplify impact, improve workflows, and facilitate collaboration. She’s been active in the digital and human rights, media and democracy, and communications spaces for over a decade through work with mission-oriented organizations such as OpenArchive, Global Voices, the Center for Global Communication Studies, and Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her current work at OpenArchive, her recent projects include Global Voices’ Civic Media Observatory which uses deep qualitative analysis from local researchers to increase understanding of what is going on in regional media ecosystems.

Alexandrine is Director of Strategy at Privacy International. She manages and oversees the development and delivery of Privacy International's strategic portfolio aimed at ensuring that innovative solutions serve individual and communities and protection their dignity rather than state power and corporate interest. This portfolio explores issues of digital identity, protecting communities at risk online, the digitisation of access to economic, social and cultural rights, and the use of data and technology in immigration enforcement control and border management.

Previously, she was engaged in research and advocacy on issues relating to human rights, irregular migration, Security Sector Reform (SSR), gender, conflict management, and human security. Amer Ammache is a Program Associate with the Middle East and North Africa team at the National Democratic Institute (NDI), based in Washington D.C. In his role, Amer supports international development programs working on freedom of expression, local civil society capacity building, inclusion of marginalized communities and digital literacy and online safety in the MENA region. In addition to supporting the adaptation and translation of PEN America and NDI's Online Harassment Field Manual into Arabic and for a MENA audience, Amer currently manages NDI's E-learning Platform, TaalamSharek.

With over ten years of experience with editing and communication, Ameya has studied English, Latin American Studies and Business Administration.

Amira Galal is a specialist in online harmful speech and its various manifestations. She works at Internews on digital rights projects covering the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, and Latin America. Amira is a former BBC journalist that transitioned to working in the humanitarian sector in Iraq, Syria, and Greece. She has brought these experiences together to adopt a holistic approach to multiregional digital rights and media development programming at Internews. She holds a Master's degree in Modern Middle East Studies from the University of Oxford and a second in International Journalism from City University, London.

Amjad Khurwat is a Computer Science Graduate from the American University of Beirut (AUB). He is passionate about Science and Technology and their impact on the sustainable development of communities. He is working as the Digital Content Manager with Roaya for Astronomy Foundation and he is the Lead Fact-Checker with Annir initiative.

A media entrepreneur, journalist, editor and literary translator, who played leading roles in media and culture projects across MENA. Ammar is now the head of operation at Taxir, a research and media initiative focused on facilitating blockchain adoption in MENA.

Anjum is the Project Co-Lead of Inclusive Aotearoa Collective Tāhono, a community based project that seeks to build belonging and inclusion by bringing together cross-sector networks.

She is a member of international committees dealing with violent extremist content online, being the co-chair of the Christchurch Call Advisory Network and a member of the Independent Advisory Committee of the Global Internet Forum for Countering Terrorism. Both of these are multi-stakeholder forums that deal with complexities of safety and freedom online.

Asmaa is the Fund’s MENA program director. She has joined the Fund in January 2016 as the Program Officer for North Africa. Prior to this, she worked with the Human Rights National Council in Morroco as Advisor to the president on youth and civil society and held the position of Deputy coordinator of the national human rights action plan within the Human rights information, documentation, and training center. From 2004 to 2006, she worked with the Moroccan Equity and Reconciliation Commission as the head of the Documentation and Records Management Unit. In addition, Asmaa also worked with several human rights organizations in Morocco. Asmaa holds a bachelor's degree in Information Sciences from the school of information sciences in Rabat and a Masters in Human rights from the University of Essex in the UK. Chérif is Access Now’s MENA Policy Analyst. He graduated as an IT engineer and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management Data Systems as well. Passionate about politics in a data-driven society, he previously worked with I Watch Organization, the Tunisian section of Transparency International, as their IT & Communication Manager before joining the National Democratic Institute as a Parliament and Political Affairs Officer. Chérif strongly believes that technology and today’s politics are heavily interconnected, making the protection of digital rights in public policies’ design and implementation both a legal and technological challenge.

Cosette Maalouf, born in Lebanon in 1983, is currently a freelance Mental health expert and psychosocial and gender trainer, also a psychological consular for journalists suffering from Trauma. was a master trainer with IREX, she trains journalists on Self-care and Psychosocial support, was formerly the Regional Mental Health Program Coordinator, and a Trainer at The Arab Resource Collective (ARC). She managed the regional program of activities while being responsible for its planning and implementation. She also designed and delivered sessions on psychosocial support and mental health. She beholds a Masters's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychopathology delivered by Université Saint-Joseph (USJ). At ARC, she was also a supervisor for a study conducted by YALE University in Beirut for 2 years, also participated in the design and data collection of one of ARC’s parenting programme HEPPP (health, education, and protection parenting programme). Cosette Maalouf also works as an Advocacy and Communication Coordinator at Proud Lebanon, a Lebanese NGO. She is responsible for communication with the media. She organizes regional workshops and supports the development of proposals for fundraising using the log frame approach while following up on the implementation of the different activities. As a psychologist, Cosette possesses a large board of technical skills she acquired while providing psychological support to parents and families, monitoring psychological group support, developing methods for students with special needs, and while working in prisons.

Dia Kayyali (they/them) served most recently as Associate Director of Advocacy at Mnemonic, the umbrella organization for Syrian Archive, Yemeni Archive, Sudanese Archive, and Ukrainian Archive. In their role, Dia focused on the real-life impact of decisions made by lawmakers and technology companies about content moderation and related topics. Previously, Dia worked at WITNESS and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, focusing on free expression, surveillance, digital security, and content moderation. Dia served as co-chair for the Advisory Network to the Christchurch Call for two years and is on the Advisory Board for OnlineCensorship.org and the TRUE (Trust in User Evidence) Project initiated by Prof. Yvonne McDermot at Swansea University. They graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctorate from University of California Hastings College of the Law and received their BA in Anthropology magna cum laude from UC Berkeley, California.

Dina/Joe (Pron. They/He/She) is a queer activist/ researcher, working on LGBTIQ+ Digital Safety and Security, as well as independent researches and articles concerning cyber cultures. They have previously held the position of Holistic Safety and security officer at Mesahat Foundation for Sexual and Gender Diversity (Egypt and Sudan) and currently is working independently, and with other organization with the aim of raising awareness and support related to cyber security. Born and raised in Amman, Jordan, obtaining her undergraduate degree in Management Sciences from the German Jordanian University and then her postgraduate degree in Emerging Economies and Inclusive Development from King’s College London in 2018. With experience working in sustainable community-based tourism development, she joined Ahel in 2020 as a Campaign Coach in the Coaching Campaigns Department. Since then, Farah has coached different campaigns organizing for various causes, people with disabilities rights, children rights, and health rights. In mid-2021, Farah completed her Executive Education in Leadership, Organizing and Action: Leading Change from Harvard University. In 2022, Farah is also leading the Leadership & Team program at Ahel; a program of coaching interventions to build collective leadership in collective action for campaigns across the Arab World.

Veteran journalist, media innovator, and senior executive, Fatemah Farag is the Founder and Director of Welad Elbalad Media Services LTD, a company dedicated to community media development and media excellence in Egypt. She is the first Arab woman and first Egyptian to have been voted to the Executive Committee and Board of WAN IFRA and is the former Arab Region Director for WAN IFRA’s Women in News Program (WIN).
Currently WINs Senior Consultant for Strategic Partnerships, Farag is also a World Editors Forum (WEF) board member and currently holds the position of Associate Director for Gender Coordination at the American University in Cairo (AUC).
In addition to these titles she is a Harvard Neiman Visiting Fellow (2016).

Ghaida Bouchaala is a senior engineering student at the National Institute of Applied Science and Technology, a Thomas Jefferson Scholar, and a US Department of State Alumna. She works as an Associate Product Manager at Expensya and has been part of the 1st cohort of the Digital Safety Forum in June 2022 by Digital Citizenship. Ghaida also served as a Shawnee State Student Government Association Senator for the Academic Committee and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Ghaida believes that as we transition into the digital age, a deeper awareness of our digital rights is the first step toward creating a better world.

Haider Kareem: I am a human rights officer in the Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance
Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). I have been working with UNAMI for more than 16 years.
I worked on several human rights issues such as the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, minority
rights, freedom of expressions, freedom of peaceful assembly freedom of journalism in Iraq. worked on
documenting and reporting the violations against journalists, bloggers, activists and HRDs specially in
and after the October 2019 mass anti-government demonstrations.
I also work on the promotion of human rights via several campaigns, advocacies and projects to
disseminate the culture of human rights. those activities aimed at integrating and disseminating human
rights through art work, short film festivals and street murals. The last was working on the project of
digital security and digital rights project for HRDs and activists. After finalizing the first phase of the
project successfully although, most it was online due to COVID, we started to implement the second
phase of the project by holding in-person training workshops in several governorates in Iraq. In our
project, in its two phases, we tried to raise the awareness and knowledge of the activists and HRDs of
their rights online which are and should be equal to their rights offline.

Jeje Mohamed is the program manager for digital safety and free expression at PEN America. She has over nine years of experience working on human rights issues, journalism, and safety and security in the Middle East and internationally. Previously, she was a Next-Gen Safety Trainers fellow with the International Women’s Media Foundation, developing inclusive and trauma-informed safety and security training. She managed several campaigns and programs focusing on racial disparities and human rights violations in Egypt and exile. She led and took part in the production of documentaries focusing on social issues and founded Witness Magazine which covered human rights abuses in Egypt and the Middle East.

Jillian C. York is the Director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and is based in Berlin, Germany. Her work examines state and corporate censorship and its impact on culture and human rights, with a focus on historically marginalized communities.

Josh is a technologist, digital rights advocate, and a co-founder of Center for Digital Resilience (CDR). He oversees the development and implementation of the CDR Link platform, the Waterbear data collection and analysis platform, and other aspects of CDR’s technical infrastructure. He was previously advocacy director at Access Now and campaign director at Free Press, where he helped lead global efforts to protect free expression online, fight for privacy, secure strong open internet rules, and rein in government surveillance.

Khaled Mansour is a writer and communication expert with many years of experience at the United Nations and as a foreign correspondent. He has worked and written on political issues, human rights, humanitarian aid, and peacekeeping in addition to his fiction work. As a journalist and then a UN spokesperson, he worked for years in conflict and transitional situations such as in South Africa, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and the Sudan in addition to his work on US politics in Washington DC in the 1990s and at the UN headquarters in New York. Before he became a full-time writer in 2015, he was the Executive Director of Egypt's leading human rights organization, EIPR (2013-2014). He published seven books, mostly in Arabic. His debut novel, “A Minefield” and his memoirs on Afghanistan, “From Taliban to Taliban” appeared in Arabic in early 2022. He joined META Oversight Board in 2022 and keeps a blog at khaledmansour.org

Khalid Ibrahim is the Executive Director of the Gulf Centre for human
rights (GCHR) in charge of management, programme development, fundraising and
training. He is an Iraqi human right defender with decades of experience
in the human rights field, including more than ten years in Dublin a
staff of Frontline Defenders. There, he had the chance to work on human
rights issues in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. In
2011, he decided to focus on human rights in the Gulf region and
neighbouring countries. He co-founded the Gulf Center for Human Rights
(GCHR).

Leandro Ucciferri is the Global Partnerships Manager at Ranking Digital Rights, where he works with civil society organizations around the world on research and advocacy projects to hold tech power accountable. Before joining RDR, Leandro was a researcher and project officer at the Association for Civil Rights (ADC, in Spanish), a non-profit and independent NGO, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 2015 to 2020. At ADC, Leandro managed research projects and advocacy campaigns focused on the right to privacy in the digital age. He has published reports covering issues such as biometrics, encryption, surveillance, cybersecurity, financial technologies, and digital identity. The Lumen database collects and analyzes legal complaints and requests for removal of online materials, helping Internet users to know their rights and understand the law. These data enable us to study the prevalence of legal threats and let Internet users see the source of content removals.

Mahmoud is a bilingual, passionate, and determined human rights activist with over 10 years of experience at the forefront of personal rights, refugees’ rights, LGBTQ+ Rights, and social-economic rights activism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). He cooperated with WITNESS for years in different projects before he joined the organization as the Programmatic Comms Coordinator, MENA in January 2022.

Before joining WITNESS, he worked to help disadvantaged individuals and communities find empowerment through working with natural leaders as well as regional and international organizations.

Marwa Fatafta leads Access Now’s work on digital rights in the Middle East and North Africa region as the MENA Policy and Advocacy Manager. She has written extensively on the intersection of technology and human rights including content moderation, freedom of expression, data protection, and surveillance tech. Marwa is a member of Bread&Net's Advisory Committee. She is also a Policy Analyst at Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. Before joining Access Now, Marwa worked as the MENA Regional Advisor at Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin and coordinated regional and global efforts to mainstream gender into anti-corruption policies and norms. Marwa was a Fulbright scholar to the US, and holds an MA in International Relations from Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University. She holds a second MA in Development and Governance from University of Duisburg-Essen.

Mays is a professional Programs Manager with over 6 years’ experience working with civil society organizations in Jordan.
Mays has been working for Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) since 2016. In June 2016 she worked as a project coordinator for CDFJ until January 2018, and from January 2018 until August 2021 she served as an international relations and advocacy officer for CDFJ. In September 2021, she was upgraded and becomes the Programs Manager for CDFJ.
Between June 2014 and April 2016, she interned with Penal Reform International MENA office in Amman. During this internship program, she gained good knowledge in providing logistical support for organizing conferences and big events. She has also gained a good knowledge in collecting data for research studies and in-depth reports. In 2015, she was selected from the Panel Reform International regional office to intern in Panel Reform International Headquarter Office based in the UK-London for 2 months, and when she finished the internship program in London, she returned she was assigned to the Unit of Advocacy and Funding in the MENA region office.
Mays has advanced knowledge and experience in leading long-term and sensitive programs in a challenging environment and in building long-lasting relationships with international donors, civil society organizations and government stakeholders. She has also a proven track records in networking and advocacy, and in coordinating joint initiatives and actions with media organizations and journalists in the MENA region. Mays has good experience in international human rights law, humanitarian and human rights system in the MENA region.

Meroua Zouai is the Legal Associate at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP). She received her J.D. and M.A. in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania with a Global Human Rights Certificate.

Michael Atsbeha is social media specialist with a focus on hate speech and disinformation. A journalist with expertise in East and the Horn of Africa region, Michael has over 15 years of reporting experience with international news outlets and broadcasters. He specializes in social media data analytics as well as advanced factchecking and verification. Michael is passionate about freedom of expression that respects individual’s right to exercise all forms of speech without fear or unlawful restrictions. Furthermore, he strongly believes these rights should come with individual and collective responsibilities to protect communities from hate speech, incitement and violence.

Mirvat Salameh is an international development program officer and project management consultant with expertise on democracy and good governance in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Her years of program management experience in the development sector focuses on freedom of expression, internet and psychosocial safety, local civic participation, inclusion of marginalized communities, civil society capacity building and parliamentary strengthening. Currently, Mirvat is serving as a project manager for the adaptation and translation of PEN America and the National Democratic Institute's (NDI) Online Harassment Field Manual into Arabic and for a MENA audience.

Mohamad Najem is the executive director of the Beirut–based digital rights organization SMEX (smex.org)—the Middle East and North Africa’s leading digital rights organization. Mohamad organizes the yearly event “Bread & Net”, the first unconference in the MENA region that tackles topics related to technology and human rights. Mona holds MA in Social Media and Digital Communication from the University of Westminster. Nour is a lawyer working across litigation, policy, and public advocacy at Privacy International. Nour’s work focuses on resisting surveillance, ensuring social protection and protecting civic spaces.

Nour has a particular interest in policy and human rights in the Middle East/SWANA region. Prior to joining PI, Nour was a Columbia Law School Fellow working in Beirut, and trained as a lawyer at a corporate law firm in London. Peter founded Synaps to distill almost 20 years experience working in and on the Arab world. During this itinerary, which led him from Iraq to Lebanon, then Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and back to Lebanon, he combined academia with long-form journalism, consultancies, and a ten-year tenure with the International Crisis Group. A French citizen born in England, he studied biology before switching to political science and sociology, and lived happily ever after.

Raed Jarrar is an Arab-American political advocate based in Washington, DC. Since he immigrated to the U.S. in 2005, he has worked as a lobbyist on political issues pertaining to the U.S. engagement in the Arab world.

Widely recognized as an expert on political, social, and economic developments in the MENA region, he has testified in numerous Congressional hearings and briefings. He is a frequent guest on national and international media outlets in Arabic and English, including CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the BBC, Al Jazeera, and Sky News Arabia. He has been published in the New York Times and quoted in media outlets including the Washington Post, Al Jazeera, the Hill, the Guardian, Newsweek, and more.

Raed was raised in countries all across the Middle East. He is a graduate of the University of Baghdad, where he received his Bachelor's Degree, and the University of Jordan, where he received his Master's Degree, both in architectural engineering. His Master's thesis focused on post-war reconstruction. He is on the Advisory Board of the organization Airwars.

Raphael is the founder of Horizontal, a non-profit that leverages technology for rights and justice. Horizontal empowers activists, journalists and human rights defenders to operate safely in the face of surveillance, censorship, and repression. Sarah Kuhail, a digital culture expert and a specialist of cross-cultural communication and international management, is an experienced communications strategist, researcher and development consultant. Zak Rogoff is a research manager at Ranking Digital Rights. He works for an internet that truly serves the interests of everyone, and he believes the human rights framework is the best way to get there.

Rogoff has appeared on Al Jazeera and had writing and quotations published in outlets from Motherboard to the scientific journal Nature. Before becoming a researcher, Rogoff worked as a digital rights campaigner. At Access Now, he campaigned against internet shutdowns with a global coalition. Before that, he fought to maintain the security and openness of the technology underlying the web, leading campaigns at the Free Software Foundation. He has also worked to rein in government surveillance as a campaigner at U.S.-based Fight for the Future and a research fellow at the Chilean NGO Derechos Digitales.

صدى سوشيال هي مبادرة شبابية تعمل بشكل تطوعي منذ أيلول 2017 ، وهي ترصد وتسجيل الانتهاكات ضد المحتوى الفلسطيني ، وتعمل على دعم الحقوق الرقمية الفلسطينية وتنشط في مواجهة المحتوى الكاذب والمزيف على منصات التواصل الاجتماعي ، بالإضافة إلى العمل على دعم وحماية المحتوى الفلسطيني والوقوف في وجه الانتهاكات الرقمية ، وتعمل المبادرة على توفير الخبرات والمهارات لتطوير المحتوى والاستخدام الجيد للفضاء الرقمي.

Mohamed Farahat is an Egyptian based legal practitioner, trainer, political, and legal researcher. Mr. Farahat is a member of bord of directors - Innovation for Change Middle East and North Africa MENA Hub, Management Advisory Group (MAG) vice chairman and member at North Africa Internet Governance (NAIGF), member of African Digital Rights Network (ADRN), North Africa Representative at E-Governance and Internet Governance Foundation for Africa (EGIGFA), and African ICT Foundation’s Focal Point Representative for Egypt. He was a member of the steering committee of Internet Rights and Principles Coalition (IRPC). Mr. Farahat was guest speaker, organizer, and attendee of about 30 conferences and workshops on national, regional and global level that covered topics related to digital rights, refugees’ issues and statelessness. He was research fellow and later as digital rights consultant with International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA). Mr. Farahat was Researcher and Analyst, collaborative research project- and co-author in report on internet law surveillance in Africa -The Institute of Development Studies (IDS)- at the University of Sussex Digital Rights Landscape Reports, research leader with African Digital Rights Hub (ADRH) in project about data protection in Africa, and Co-author with Paradigm Initiative about digital rights report in Africa. Academically, Mr. Farahat holds a degree in Law from Cairo University and several post-graduate diplomas in international law, Human Rights and civil society, International Negotiation, African Studies-politics division, Parliamentary Studies. Currently, he is a master’s degree researcher in African Studies and MA student –Migration and refugees’ studies –American university in Cairo-AUC.
