We will give attendees access to use Censored Planet's censorship exploration dashboard. We will teach attendees how to use the dashboard through an interactive workshop without assuming any previous level of censorship knowledge, while also introducing some basic concepts of network censorship. Attendees will learn how to use the dashboard independently to answer their questions about censorship.
Censored Planet, in collaboration with Google Jigsaw, has developed a network censorship dashboard for exploring the data collected by Censored Planet (https://censoredplanet.org). As the raw data produced by Censored Planet is hard to explore due to its size, format, and lack of details, we have developed a censorship data analysis pipeline and dashboard that lets users quickly analyze, extend, and explore censorship measurement data. The Censored Planet dashboard lets users explore longitudinal Censored Planet data, allowing for the quick and easy understanding of censors' behaviors and censorship events.
Armin Huremagic (Researcher, UMich) and Sarah Laplante (Software Engineer, Google Jigsaw) will give a short talk showing some examples of using the dashboard to understand censorship in Arabic-speaking countries. Then we'll work with participants to go through example cases they're interested in to try and understand censorship.
No previous familiarity with network censorship is required to participate.
