Session participants will learn
- how they can use Tella to protect files on their mobile devices and stay safe while documenting human rights violations
- what the main security features and limitations of Tella are
- how to install and use the app
- how organizations can collect data to bring accountability and justice
We will demo and discuss the Tella app and how it can be used to document human rights violations, particularly in challenging environments--with limited or no internet connectivity or in the face of repression. Participants will be encouraged to share feedback on the app and make suggestions for improvements.
Tella has three main objectives:
- Protecting users who engage in documentation from physical and digital repression
- Protecting the data they collect from censorship, tampering, interception, and destruction
- Empowering individuals and groups to easily and quickly collect data and produce high quality documentation that can be used for research, advocacy, or transitional justice
Session outline:
- 5min: Introduction on Horizontal and Tella
- 25min: Live demo of the main features of the app and how to set it up
- 25 min: Q&As, discussion, and feedback gathering
- 5min: How to be in touch to report issues, make suggestions, or receive training on the app
