DESCRIPTION:Ever since Peter Shor published his famous algorithm in 1994 th
ere has been excitement how a hypothetical quantum computer could break th
e commonly used encryption methods which we routinely rely upon today. In
the last few years there has been a crescendo of announcements about devel
opments in quantum computing\, and also many commentators warning darkly o
f an imminent apocalypse. However\, the world still seems to keep going. C
yber security professionals are left wondering what all the fuss is about\
, what they should be doing\, and where this sits amongst all the other vu
lnerabilities and threats they face.\nThis talk will aim to explain all\,
and although the speaker has a PhD in quantum physics\, no scientific expe
rtise will be required to follow along. We will discuss:\n-	What quantum c
omputers are\, and what they are not\n-	The current state of quantum compu
ting technology\, what is still needed before Shor’s algorithm becomes a
realistic threat\, and the likely timelines\n-	The recent developments in
mitigations against this threat\, including latest research and practical
experiences in implementation of solutions\n-	What cybersecurity professi
onals need to worry about\, what they should actually do\, and when\nAlong
the way\, we will expose some common myths\, have a look at the truth beh
ind some of the headlines you may have seen\, and leave the audience with
pragmatic\, actionable advice to incorporate into their work.
