Crossing the Wire: Defensive OT Workshop with Live Red Team Attack
2026-04-10 , Workshops

This interactive workshop offers a practical, hands-on experience within an Operational Technology (OT) laboratory setting. Participants will work with real-world industrial control processes to gain a clear understanding of how OT systems function and where vulnerabilities can occur. Through guided activities, the session will uncover common cyber risks affecting critical infrastructure and demonstrate proven approaches to identifying, assessing, and managing these threats. By the end, attendees will appreciate the unique challenges of securing OT environments and take away practical strategies to strengthen resilience against evolving cyber threats.

This purpose-built OT laboratory offers a practical environment for exploring industrial control systems and understanding cyber risks in a safe, controlled setting. At its centre is a hypervisor running a SCADA platform, which connects to four PLCs through ESP32 modules using the Modbus protocol. These PLCs manage a variety of physical processes, including motors, pump valves, lighting systems, and radio frequency controls linked to remote-controlled ship and helicopter models.
The lab mirrors real-world operational technology scenarios, giving participants the chance to see how interconnected systems operate and where vulnerabilities can arise. Working with live processes rather than theory provides valuable insight into OT architecture, automation logic, and the potential impact of cyber threats on physical operations. This hands-on experience bridges the gap between IT and OT, making complex concepts clear and equipping learners with practical skills to manage risk effectively.

I am an ISA/IEC 62443 Certified Expert leading an OT consultancy team focused on securing Critical National Infrastructure and manufacturing environments. My work involves delivering robust cyber security strategies, risk assessments, and compliance solutions to protect complex industrial systems from evolving threats.
Previously, I spent 22 years in the Royal Navy specialising in Electronic Warfare and Cyber Defence, gaining extensive experience in countering advanced threats and supporting the protection of mission-critical systems. This background provides a strong foundation for understanding the challenges of resilience in operational technology.
