2024-04-20 –, Track 2
Discussions of network segmentation take place in many public forums like conferences and workshops relating to protecting network infrastructure. What needs to be improved is guidance on how to approach it and what steps to take to apply it. As important as the technical design, it is essential to understand the goals of network segmentation for business continuity. There are two perspectives on network segmentation. One is from the perspective of the network engineer, and one is from the perspective of the cybersecurity engineer. This presentation will highlight the different perspectives of network segmentation and share philosophies on approaching it. This presentation will also discuss segmenting network topologies with Access Control List and firewalls and the importance of designing a flexible IP schema.
I aim to spark healthy debate/discussion on approaching network segmentation and what that could look like. We all know we need to do it, so how does everyone go about it? By no means do I think I have the best ideas; I use the tools and knowledge that I have at a given point in time to solve a problem.

When have you done enough segmentation?
Born and raised in a small Kansas town of fewer than 300 people, I learned early on that a person’s word is their bond and a handshake still means everything. My foundation is built on the rural Midwest values of faith, family, and relentless hard work—principles that guide me whether I’m at home, on the road, or securing a network.
My journey into technology started with a dial-up modem and a few close friends. What began as a way to connect for games like Quake, Counter-Strike, and MechWarrior sparked a lifelong obsession with how systems talk to one another. Today, I’ve translated that early curiosity into a successful career in computer networking and cybersecurity, where I focus on building resilient systems and mentoring the next generation of tech professionals.
Beyond the office, my life is defined by my family, my faith, and a deep-seated patriotism. We are bikers by lifestyle, not just hobbyists. This commitment to the road is also a commitment to service; I am a proud member of Bikers Against Bullies, specifically the only Kansas chapter—BAB Great Plains. Through this organization, I work directly with children to bring awareness to the effects of bullying and empower them to live with respect and confidence.
When I'm not riding or serving my community, you can find me:
- Competing in 3-gun shooting or hunting.
- Perfecting my craft as a Pit Master (and resident BBQ snob) at a backyard cookout.
- Enjoying a fine whiskey and a cigar while diving into tabletop board games or a classic FPS.
I believe in technical excellence rooted in old-school integrity. If you're looking to talk shop about network security, the biker community, or the secret to the perfect brisket, let’s connect.
