Humanity has some serious issues defining what is real and what is fake. We base our reality upon our proven evidence of the world - our observables. What if what we observe is so convincing that it causes entire movements of falsity? In this talk, we explore the use of AI technologies in disinformation campaigns around the world. We’ll cover some past campaigns and their long-term effects, the technology behind them, and some actions you as a non-AI lifeform can take to prevent rampant overuse in human rhetoric.
This talk came about after a very long set of conversations with friends on the most convincing AI-generated images and text they’d seen. As with all good research, it began with some light-hearted Googling and resulted in a year and a half of research on tools, examination of generated media, and deep-diving on industry articles and latest campaigns.
It is intended to be a call-to-action and primer on the way that AI technologies are used and abused in wider systemic social events. We’ve watched stock prices change from a single generated photo, millions of people fooled by scams backed by deepfaked videos, and blind belief of generated text resulting in lawsuits and costly errors.
