What You Think is What You Get: How Framing Hypnosis Changes Hypnosis
2026-01-16 , Coastal Main (hybrid)

The first Mesmerists associated trance with seizures, and now subjects flop over limp instead. Across history and cultures, what trance looks like has been completely different. Does hypnosis feel like mind control to you? Thank Hollywood! How much of Hypnosis is 'real' and how much is a socially perpetuated mass-suggestion? This class draws on Predictive Processing Theory and Phenomenological Control Theory to change how you think about hypnosis, and reveal how that alone changes everything. Then, we can have a discussion on how we, as a community, can using our framing to make hypnosis work the way we want it to.

Mutt (she/her) has been doing hypnosis for over a decade. She got started through experiments with her CogSci classmates in college; and has been aroused and excited by the intersections of psychology and hypnosis ever since. In addition to teaching HypnoKink 101, subject skills, and self-hypnosis; Mutt organizes the Trancesylvania HypnoKink skill share in Philadelphia, makes hypnosis audio files, and has served on consent teams at NEEHU and Charmed. She is a real dog IRL and hopes to one day be experimented on by Dr. Ivan Pavlov. Her website is https://mutthypno.com
