DESCRIPTION:<b>Topic</b>\nLibrary patrons do not enter one-on-one consultat
ions as fragmented people. They bring their whole selves to the interactio
n\, including their trauma. How does a librarian help a patron\, staying w
ithin our scope of practice\, but also accept and address the trauma that
could be constraining the interaction. This workshop will focus on synchro
nous patron interactions\, held physically or virtually. The Substance Ab
use and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed the S
AMHSA's Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach that
can serve as a guide for reframing service in this setting. The approach
includes the three Es of trauma\, the four Rs that are key assumptions\, t
he six key principles\, and the ten implementation domains for systems. T
his adoption is a no-tech solution that only requires practitioner reflect
ion and intent for implementation. \n\n<b>Target Audience</b>\nLibrarians
at any career stage\, interacting individually with patrons in all types o
f settings and modalities. \n\n<b>Objectives</b>\nIdentify the SAMSHA Con
cept of Trauma Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach\, including the con
cept of trauma\, key assumptions\, and the guiding principles for approach
ing trauma. \nAssess current personal practice against the SAMSHA Approach
 . \nConstruct trauma-informed practices for synchronous\, one-on-one inter
 actions with patrons.\n\n<b>Interactive Activities</b>\nScripted role-play
ing\, critical incident method\, and autoethnographic reflection will be u
 sed during the session.
