State of GeoPandas (and friends)
GeoPandas is one of the core packages in the Python ecosystem to work with geospatial vector data, combining the power of a whole ecosystem of open source geo tools. This talk with given an overview of recent developments in the GeoPandas project and the broader geospatial community.
GeoPandas is one of the core packages in the Python ecosystem to work with geospatial vector data. By combining the power of several open source geo tools (GEOS/Shapely, GDAL/pyogrio, PROJ/pyproj) and extending the pandas data analysis library to work with geographic objects, it is designed to make working with geospatial data in Python easier. GeoPandas enables you to easily do operations in Python that would otherwise require desktop applications like QGIS or a spatial database such as PostGIS.
This talk will give an overview of recent developments in the GeoPandas community, both in the project itself as in the broader ecosystem of packages on which GeoPandas depends or that can interact with GeoPandas (e.g. improved plotting functionality, better support for geographic coordinates, improved interoperability with the broader ecosystem through Arrow, etc).
The target audience are users, or potential users, of GeoPandas (which is not limited to traditional GIS workflows, but anything that has a spatial aspect, down to biological cells), who are familiar with the library or with spatial workflows and will get an interesting update. But also a broader audience will get insights in how this ecosystem of tools works together.
I am a core contributor to Pandas and Apache Arrow, and one of the maintainers of GeoPandas and Shapely. I did a PhD at Ghent University and VITO in air quality research, worked at the Paris-Saclay Center for Data Science and at Voltron Data contributing to Apache Arrow. I am a freelance open source software developer and teacher.
