DESCRIPTION:Efforts to accommodate cycling in relation to spaces establish
ed for the mobilities of cars bring about very difficult political fights.
My objective is to learn how to understand and think the mobility of cyc
ling in relation to the spatiality of car–driving\, considering what it
must take to overcome the fight of bikes vs. cars over space.\n\nI begin t
his work by analysing core ways in which spatial conflict arises between c
ycling and car–driving. On this basis\, I orient my investigation prima
rily through the contention that cycling is best thought through the idea
of assemblage and the ontology of becoming\, as theorised by Gilles Deleuz
e\, Felix Guattari\, Elizabeth Grosz\, Manuel DeLanda\, and several other
scholars of cycling. I do not propose that cycling is distinct from car
–driving on this basis alone. However\, I argue that the becoming assem
blage of cycling is itself at odds with that of car–driving\, resulting
in the incessant conflict between the mobilities.\n\nFrom this analysis\,
drawing from the ideas of such scholars as Inna Viriasova\, Roberto Esposi
to\, and Massimo Cacciari\, I propose that the political conflict that typ
ically plagues the spatial interrelations of cycling versus car–driving
is rooted in the fact that\, whereas car–driving invites the political g
overnance of mobilities spatially\, cycling is a mobility that forms funda
mentally unpolitical or impolitical spacings\, rendering cycling ungoverna
ble with respect to the spatial determinants of car–driving.\n\nThinking
cycling in the terms of the unpolitical and ungovernable\, I recommend re
presenting the spatial relations of cycling to car–driving in the terms
of a "lawscape\," as theorised by Andreas Philippopoulos–Mihalopoulos.
In this way\, I contend it is possible to understand how cycling poses a s
patial rupture to spatial formations required through car–driving\, maki
ng possible a withdrawal toward more just spacings of mobility.
