DESCRIPTION:Automated mobility technologies are increasingly promoted as s
olutions to urban transport challenges. Yet even before large-scale deploy
 ment\, anticipatory governance—through pilot projects\, planning strateg
ies\, and regulatory frameworks—already reshapes urban mobility environm
ents. These changes may affect children’s opportunities for independent
and active mobility\, which play a crucial role in the development of auto
nomy\, spatial competence\, and social participation.\nThis PhD project in
vestigates how the anticipatory governance of automated mobility influence
s children’s real opportunities for independent mobility in cities\, and
under what conditions democratic societies may be justified in constraini
ng automation to protect these capabilities.\nThe project combines normati
ve political theory with comparative urban governance analysis. It develop
s a theoretical framework integrating capability theory\, intergenerationa
l justice\, and democratic governance under uncertainty. Independent mobil
ity in childhood is conceptualized as a key enabling capability that suppo
rts multiple dimensions of human development.
