DESCRIPTION:Two cycling routes connecting the same origin and destination 
 may expose cyclists to substantially different levels of traffic-related a
 ir pollution. However\, the extent to which alternative cycling routes lea
 d to different cumulative pollution exposure remains insufficiently explor
 ed.\n\nThis study uses microscopic traffic simulation to estimate a proxy-
 based cyclist exposure indicator derived from simulated PM-emissions and c
 yclists’ travel time along the route. Traffic dynamics are simulated usi
 ng PTV Vissim\, and emission factors are applied based on fleet compositio
 n and traffic volumes on Munich’s road network. The resulting emission e
 stimates are combined with cyclists’ travel time to approximate cumulati
 ve exposure along the route.\n\nThe analysis compares exposure levels betw
 een a motor-traffic-adjacent cycling route and green corridor cycling alte
 rnative\, and examines differences between rush-hour and off-peak conditio
 ns.\nIn addition\, route-based exposure estimates are contrasted with stat
 ionary air-quality measurements. While stationary sensors capture pollutio
 n levels at specific locations\, cyclists experience exposure along their 
 routes. This perspective highlights potential limitations of point-based m
 onitoring for understanding cyclists’ actual exposure.\n\nThe study demo
 nstrates how simulation-based exposure proxies can support the design of f
 uture field measurement campaigns by identifying routes and time periods w
 ith potentially large exposure differences. In future work\, the simulatio
 n-based estimates will be validated with real-world measurements.
