Engaging underrepresented population groups in real-world active mobility research in the Caribbean region: insights from a community based researcher

-Bonaire, with its laid-back pace and warm climate, has all the ingrediënt for a strong cycling culture. Yet like any place, it also faces barriers—limited infrastructure, car-centric planning, and perceptions that cycling is only for recreation, not real mobility.

Through interviews, site visits, and daily immersion, I gained insight into how people move through space, and what shapes those choices—from safety and comfort, to identity and accessibility.

What made this experience truly special was the chance to see first-hand how mobility is deeply connected to broader issues like equity, environment, and culture.
Through dialogues, I came to see mobility not just as a technical or urban planning issue, but as a deeply social and cultural one. I will shed some light over these insights, for example what building sustainable transport means in the values, habits, and daily constraints of a divers community.

Furthermore I will share my opinion about how to change a deep-rooted behaviour versus a deep-rooted infrastructure.
The question is: What came first? The chicken or the egg?
