Risk, Control, and Audit Management for Blockchain Technology
Tatiana Scripnic

Within the past few years auditing blockchain technology has become a key requirement and an asset within the crypto industry. The regulatory pressure for maintaining a mature risk and controls framework and having frequent inhouse audits over compliance with key requirements has become scrutinized and simply essential within the community. Lamentably, the crypto and blockchain communities are not too familiar with what a risk and controls framework is and how to perform an audit. Furthermore, not many are aware of core technology standards and global regulatory requirements as most of the attention has been over AML, sanction screening and transaction monitoring etc. while ignoring key Information Technology and Information Security standards. This workshop will walk the audience through the basics of risk and audit management, dive into what are some of the core IT and IS requirements for blockchain and crypto technology and also explore how to think about auditing internally before a regulatory examination.

The Next Frontier in Online Shopping: Unlocking New Possibilities with AI and Web3
Lauren Tierney, Grace Casey

Blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) technology are revolutionizing the e-commerce industry. This technology has the potential to enhance e-commerce experiences, drive revenue for businesses, and deepen consumer-brand relationships.

The session specifically examines three core use cases of blockchain and AI in e-commerce: commerce co-creation, proof of custody, and immersive e-commerce. Commerce co-creation allows brands to co-create new products and experiences with their consumers, while proof of custody ensures the authenticity and provenance of products. Immersive e-commerce uses virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create more engaging and interactive shopping experiences.

The use of blockchain and AI in e-commerce is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to fundamentally reshape the way we shop online.

Some use cases discussed:

  1. Traditional e-commerce platforms are static and fail to engage online shoppers.
  2. Blockchain and AI can be used to create more personalized, interactive, and immersive e-commerce experiences.
  3. Commerce co-creation allows brands to co-create new products and experiences with their consumers.
  4. Proof of custody ensures the authenticity and provenance of products.

Regenerative Finance, Leveraging Blockchain to Digitize the Renewable Energy Marketplace
Pratik Shah

The existing renewable energy certificate (REC) marketplace is similar to booking travel in the 1990s with a great deal of manual work and brokers (e.g., travel agents) - the internet and Expedia, among others, replaced that system. Innovo Markets is building the same thing for the REC marketplace so power producers (solar, wind, hydro) can sell their RECs directly to corporations (Amazon, Apple) instantaneously instead of a 30-60 day lag. New laws are creating tailwinds in the space that are estimated to grow the market from $20 billion today to over $110 billion by 2030. Using blockchain as the underlying technology to build the digital marketplace streamlines the buying/selling of RECs and creates a transparent record of activity.

ERCx, Fast Checking of ERC standards and Beyond
Yliès Falcone

ERCx (https://ercx.runtimeverification.com) is a tool suite that helps assess the behavior of smart contracts. ERCx checks the conformance of a contract to ERC (Ethereum Request for Comments) standards as well as additional desirable security properties. ERCx aims to help the Ethereum community by providing (i) contract developers with pre-deployment conformance and property checks and (ii) token investors with easy-to-run and fast quality assessment.

In this presentation, we show developers how ERCx works and how they can use it to create new tokens conformant with existing standards. Avoid repeating past mistakes and add an extra security layer when it comes to avoiding potential future exploits. We will also overview the design choices and the future of ERCx.

We will need standard equipment for a talk. If tables are present in the room, we may have a hands-on moment where attendees can experiment with the tool.

Hands-on Evaluation of ERC-20 Tokens with ERCx
Yliès Falcone

ERCx evaluates ERC (Ethereum Request for Comments) token implementation, either deployed or using their source code. During this workshop, we will focus on the ERC-20 standard and the comprehensive test suite (100+ tests) of ERCx. Participants will get familiar with how they can use ERCx to evaluate existing ERC-20 tokens and test their own implementations of ERC-20 tokens. We will briefly overview how to use the interfaces offered by ERCx. Then, the participants will be offered the following hands-on activities:

  1. Test your favorite token. In this activity, participants will select some of the tokens they are familiar with and run the ERC-20 test suite on them. Participants will learn how to read and interpret the generated reports.

  2. Find the bug in some ERC-20 tokens. In this activity, participants will be presented with buggy source code implementations of ERC-20 tokens. Participants will exploit the reports generated by ERCx to find the bugs, fix them, and ensure the patched implementations are correct.

  3. Test a list of tokens. In this activity, participants will use ERCx open API to test lists of tokens by automatically querying ERCx reports. Participants will learn how to create their own list of tokens and how to query reports in batches.

Avoiding Common Smart Contract Vulnerabilities
Jacob Van Geffen

Smart contract developers face a bevy of potential pitfalls that traditional web2 methodologies and tools are unequipped to handle. For example, reentrancy and flash loan vulnerabilities have enabled many attacks on various exchanges, and even simple functional correctness bugs can lead to costly attacks. This talk will discuss how developers can avoid these vulnerabilities in their projects, both with manual reasoning and by using tools developed by Veridise.

Every Artwork Has a Story: NFTs, Memoirs, and Beyond
Virginia Valenzuela

Description of the event: NFTs have been a part of the Ethereum ecosystem since 2017 when punks and kitties began to populate the blockchain. Since then, we have built a digital art market that spans style, genre, geography, language, and more. Not only has the NFT ecosystem proven the value of digital art, it has also challenged the traditional art market, and in doing so found a place for digital art within the upper echelons of the art world.

But in a world where there are millions (and one day trillions) of NFTs, how do we capture the history, the cultural significance, the very story of each piece of digital art?

Mint Gold Dust has always cared about the stories behind NFTs, which is why we pioneered the memoir feature, which is a piece of text that accompanies an artwork. But in our recently launched v2, we take it one step further. We preserve that memoir on the blockchain and tie it to the NFT artwork. For the archeologists of the future, NFTs minted on our platform will not only tell the visual story of our times, but also have a written counterpart onchain.

We believe that this technology will help creators to preserve history and document the digital renaissance that we are witnessing before us today.

Blockchain Enabled Social Purpose Value Chains: Organizing to Address the U.N. SDGs
Carolee Rigsbee (she/her), Carol M. Jessup, Stephen R Newell

Innovations in governance will be critical if we are going to address grand societal challenges identified by the U.N. SDGs. Research is underway to design a value-chain level blockchain based governance and operations model to effectively support the achievement of a range of pressing humanitarian social goals (e.g., stable global supply of food, access to affordable housing, regional circular economies). Called the “Social Purpose Value Chain” (SPVC), this system level concept is based on the idea that a combination of blockchain technology, coopetition, reimagination of value-chain analysis in the context of social goal achievement, a relational bureaucratic governance model that is vertically integrated (i.e., shared governance by members of each step of a value chain), and a social credit incentive system would overcome several known barriers to social goal achievement (e.g., such as power and hierarchy issues in decision making, donor-driven solutions that do not effectively or efficiently address needs, contract execution failures). The SPVC concept, the status of the software research prototype supporting it, and next steps will be discussed.

Onboarding the Mass to Web3 through Developer Education
Harry Zhang

In the quest for mass adoption, the Web3 world is in dire need of skilled developers who can create groundbreaking decentralized applications (Dapps). However, the current availability of quality Web3 developers falls significantly short. With approximately 28 million Web2 developers compared to a mere 21,000 Web3 developers worldwide, the stark reality emerges: there exists a staggering 1300X order of magnitude difference, equivalent to a meager 0.075% representation. In this talk, we will explore the pressing need to bridge this gap and transform Web3 developer education to propel the industry towards widespread adoption.
