A critical innovation that crypto enables is that you can travel across any border in the world with any amount of money by memorizing 24 secret words. However, the prospect of self-custody can be difficult and scary. While self-custody reduces your counterparty risk, the consequences of making a mistake can result in irreversible loss of funds.
