DESCRIPTION:Being able to sense physical phenomena is critical to many are
as of science\;\nfrom detecting particles in physics\, to measuring pollut
ion in public health\, to monitoring bio-diversity in ecology. Over the la
st decades\, the capabilities and costs of sensor system has become much b
etter\,\ndriven by improvements in microprocessors\, MEMS sensor technolog
y\, and low-energy wireless communication. Thanks to this\, Wireless Senso
r Networks and "Internet of Things" (IoT) sensor systems are becoming comm
on.\n\nTypically sensor nodes use microcontroller-based hardware\, and the
firmware developed primarily using C (or C++). However\, it is now becomi
ng feasible to write microcontroller firmware using Python.\nThis is thank
s to the MicroPython project\, combined with affordable and powerful hardw
are from the last couple of years. Using the familiar and high-level Pytho
n programming language makes the process of creating sensor nodes more acc
essible to an engineer or scientist.\n\nIn this talk\, we will discuss dev
eloping microcontroller-based sensors using MicroPython. This includes a b
rief introduction to MicroPython\, how to do efficient data processing\, a
nd share our experience applying this to process accelerometer and microph
one data\, using both Digital Signal Processing and Machine Learning techn
 iques.
