<description>Geospatial analyses often involve complex processing chains implemented using different tools such as Python scripts, QGIS processes, command-line utilities, or Jupyter notebooks. Evaluating the performance of these workflows can be difficult, especially when multiple parameters, datasets, or computing environments must be compared.

This short workshop introduces **Geobench**, an open-source benchmarking framework developed to simplify performance evaluation of geospatial workflows. Geobench provides a structured approach for defining experiments, executing workflows, and collecting detailed performance metrics at both system and process levels.

The workshop will cover:

* Installing and running Geobench from the source repository,
* Defining benchmarking scenarios using YAML configuration files,
* Running experiments with multiple parameter combinations,
* Monitoring workflow execution and system resources,
* Collecting and interpreting benchmarking outputs (JSON and HTML reports), and
* Comparing alternative workflows or parameter settings.

You will work through practical examples demonstrating how Geobench can be used to benchmark typical geospatial tasks implemented in Python scripts or QGIS processes. The session will also discuss how benchmarking results can support reproducible research and transparent reporting in scientific publications.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to design their own benchmarking experiments and apply them to your geospatial workflows.</description>

In this workshop, you&#8217;ll learn how to install and configure GeoServer 3 yourself, and how to publish your own vector or raster data as a beautifully styled map layer.

GeoServer is one of the most popular web mapping services in the world and has recently been updated. This workshop offers an accessible, hands-on introduction to setting up and using GeoServer 3, and has been designed for participants with no prior experience. However, it is useful to have a basic understanding of GIS concepts. You are also welcome to bring your own map data that you&apos;d like to publish!

We will start with a demonstration of the GeoServer installation and configuration, where we&apos;ll also discuss system requirements and installing extensions. This will be followed by hands-on exercises in publishing spatial data (vector, raster, and databases), configuring layers and layer groups, and styling them (symbology).

The workshop will generally be held in English, but Dutch-speaking support will also be available in the room.

<title>OpenRiverCam: open-source monitoring of water levels, velocities and discharge of open water with video as a sensor</title>
                <subtitle></subtitle>
                <type>Short workshop (July 8th)</type>

                <duration>01:30</duration>
**Background**: OpenRiverCam is a free and open-source ecosystem for measuring water levels, velocities and discharge using image-based methods. The main input is a short video of the water surface. Videos are geographically registered, preprocessed, orthorectified, analyzed for velocities, and combined with cross-section information to yield water levels and flows. It converts pixel distances into meters, extracts moving details, uses cross correlation to estimate velocities, and combines pre-measured bathymetric surveys to yield water levels and discharge. For a very clear example, check out the front page of https://openrivercam.org. The first two software products created in this ecosystem provide fully operational, autonomous and automated measurements for applications such as irrigation, real-time hydropower control, flood early warning and infrastructure design:

- OpenRiverCam Operating System (_ORC-OS_): runs on a SBC in the field and operationally collects and processes videos. Analyses can be sent to the cloud if the user wants this. _ORC-OS_ is equipped with a user-friendly web interface for configuration, live monitoring, and direct access to data and videos stored on the device.

- LiveOpenRiverCam (_LiveORC_): a REST API receiving videos from _ORC-OS_ devices, centrally storing these and serving these out as raw downloads or to applications for e.g. decision support.

**The cool thing for this workshop:** all ORC applications are built on a Python API with command-line interface called pyOpenRiverCam (_pyORC_). _PyORC_ makes available all methods through API including image stabilization, pre-processing, orthorectification, velocimetry analysis, discharge estimation and intuitive plotting. It also offers workflows for command-line processing of videos into water levels, velocities, and discharge. Moreover, if image registration control points are geographical, all outputs are geographical as well! Data can be exported to _QGIS_ compatible meshes, and visualized, and trace simulations and combinations with other geographical data can be made.

In this 90-minute workshop we will install _pyORC_ and process one or two drone videos into velocity products that can be ingested in QGIS. We will go through the entire process up to the point where you see data in QGIS. _Bring your own laptop and make sure QGIS and Python are pre-installed! Linux or Windows? Both is fine!_

<description>In this talk we will explore vehicle routing problems (VRPs) in practice. The VRP is a generalisation of the travelling salesman problem (TSP) to multiple vehicles. Many organisations routinely solve VRPs as part of their operations, and increasingly choose to rely on open source software to do so. I will introduce PyVRP, a state-of-the-art VRP solver I initially developed during my PhD at the RUG, and then discuss a few cases - including in grocery delivery, and waste collection in Groningen. Along the way we&apos;ll learn about VRPs, routing heuristics, simulations, and the potential improvements I believe open source optimisation software can unlock for many organisations.</description>

GeoServer 3 is out! This major update ensures the software is fully ready for the future, all while keeping the rock-solid stability you know and love. In this presentation, one of the core contributors from Canada will take you through everything that has changed and how to make the transition from GeoServer 2.x as smooth as possible.

We&#8217;ll look at some improvements you&#8217;ll notice right away, such as a refreshed user interface that is much nicer to work with. You&#8217;ll also discover what&#8217;s been happening behind the scenes: how the development team tackled this major modernization, what the biggest challenges were, and how the modules are now more smartly organized. On top of that, you&#8217;ll hear the first-hand experiences of users who have already made the switch.

Whether you work with GeoServer every day or are just curious about the latest trends within the project, after this 20-minute session, you&#8217;ll be completely up to date!

Using and finding (open) Agricultural Field Boundary in different geographic areas has been a hassle for a long time. The source data is scattered; hidden in different portals, formats, projections. In 2024 the open source Fiboa project (supported by Taylor Geospatial) started to publish source meta data, converter logic (code) and a source.coop directory with field boundary data converted to a single cloud-native format. More recently, we&apos;ve been trying to extend the data with a harmonized Crop Classification. In this presentation I&#8217;d like to present the relevance of field boundaries, the target specification and the published data &amp; code.

Agriculture is under pressure from water scarcity and climate change, demanding urgent transformation. Earthexplorer specializes in capacity building for governments and companies to establish sovereign data platforms for monitoring agriculture and water practices with remote sensing using open algorithms and integration with in situ farm data. It empowers local entities to deploy and manage their own monitoring infrastructure. In West Africa and MENA, the platform addresses critical data gaps where governments lack systems to integrate satellite and field data for quality crop mapping and water balance analysis. Local installation overcomes political sensitivities around water use by giving authorities full control. In Europe, it builds technical capacity at Government Paying Agencies, strengthening algorithm validation for CAP compliance monitoring. The platform standardizes field data collection, enabling algorithm developers to collect training data, establish feedback loops, and validate AI results. For agricultural businesses, it delivers high-quality, practical monitoring algorithms that align with real-world farm practices. The platform enables leveraging the EU&#8217;s Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem while maintaining sovereignty. The commercial open source software model, with subscriptions for installation, training, and updates, has been validated by EU experts as effective for stimulating adoption.

Core Flow is the data platform behind Dutch nature monitoring, designed around one question: what will someone be able to read in fifty years, with no account, no licence, and no us? Everything is stored as open files (Parquet) on S3-compatible object storage and queried directly with DuckDB, so there is no database to outlive and no proprietary layer to replace. Each dataset carries a stable UUID identity, so names and paths can change without breaking references, and data is append-only and historized, so you can ask what was known on any past date. There are no standing servers: scheduled jobs run on the GitLab CI runners we already have. The talk walks through the principles (no vendor lock-in, sovereignty, durability and cost) and how each one shaped the architecture.

<description>Core Flow v1 is the platform we use for Dutch nature data: Natura 2000, vegetation, species and administrative geographies. The talk is aimed at a geo/FOSS audience and focuses on the design choices that let public-interest spatial data survive the decades, not just the next procurement cycle. We treat storage as plain files: Parquet on S3-compatible object storage, queried directly with DuckDB, with nothing proprietary anywhere in the stack you cannot replace. Stable UUID identities sit underneath human-friendly names and paths, which solves a problem every long-lived spatial registry runs into: keeping references intact across renames and reorganisations. Everything is append-only and historized, so the record is reproducible at any past date and corrections supersede rather than erase. And because there are no standing servers (scheduled jobs run on existing GitLab CI runners), the whole thing is cheap and has almost no attack surface. Expect concrete architecture, honest trade-offs, and a clear position: paths are convenience, the UUID is the contract, and open formats are the only durable promise.</description>

National-scale 3D city model datasets are expanding rapidly -- Japan&apos;s PLATEAU project alone publishes over 170,000 files, and the Netherlands&apos; 3DBAG covers all approximately 11 million buildings in the country -- yet no standardised mechanism exists for discovering and cataloguing these datasets across repositories.

Essential properties such as coordinate reference systems, levels of detail (LoDs), and types of city objects remain embedded inside data files in a variety of formats (for example, CityGML, CityJSON, or FlatCityBuf), making them invisible to search engines and catalogue services.

We will present and discuss three contributions we have made to address that gap:

1. The [STAC 3D City Models Extension](https://github.com/cityjson/stac-city3d), a formal extension to the SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) specification that adds metadata fields for LoDs, city object types, semantic surfaces, textures, materials, and attribute schemas.
2. The software `city3dstac`, an open-source command-line tool written in Rust that automatically extracts metadata from 3D city models in multiple formats and generates STAC-compliant metadata. &lt;&gt;
3. A prototype registry that currently indexes several STAC Collections around the world. It already includes the national-scale 3D BAG, American Cities, and Estonia datasets, PLATEAU, and more are being added.

Existing STAC clients can browse the catalogue without modification, demonstrating that 3D city model metadata integrates directly into the broader geospatial data infrastructure.

Colombia&apos;s official water accounting method (ENA) relies on intensive field data and is only updated every four years, making it difficult to capture seasonal variability driven by El Ni&#241;o and La Ni&#241;a. This study explores whether freely available satellite data from FAO&apos;s WaPOR platform can support more timely and continuous agricultural water monitoring. By combining WaPOR&apos;s evapotranspiration products with ENA&apos;s crop mask in an open, adapted, and reproducible notebook-Python-based framework, we compare water consumption estimates at the sub-basin level across Colombia for 2020. Results show strong spatial agreement (R&#178; = 0.83) between both methods, with a systematic offset explained by the difference between potential and actual evapotranspiration.

AccessCity4All is a research project comparing objective, perceived, and actualized accessibility across five EU cities. Within the project, WP5 collects PPGIS data via Maptionnaire: respondents draw their perceived neighborhood on a map and mark home, work, and activity locations as points. This talk is about the R pipeline that turns those surveys into reproducible analytic datasets.
Below the survey layer everything is open: R + sf for geometry, r5r / OSRM / OpenRouteService for routing, GeoPackage and GeoJSON for interchange, and a Mistral-driven step for multilingual free-text reclassification.
What it actually taught us is what happens when around 5,000 respondents across five cities draw their own neighborhoods, around 18,000 trips need real routed distances, and free-text responses arrive in five languages. This talk walks through three defensive patterns the codebase grew over five years:

- a geometry-repair pipeline that turns freehand citizen drawings into valid analytic polygons, with home-inside verification that catches its own cache mistakes;
- a dual-mode activity-space classifier built on routed distances and pure-R clustering, with a Euclidean fallback when the routing engine is flaky;
- an audit-logged AI workflow that&apos;s defensible in peer review.

If you write geospatial R that has to survive contact with real data, this talk is for you.

Respondents draw their own perceived neighborhood as a polygon, mark home, work, study, leisure, and healthcare locations as points, and answer 70+ Likert and numeric items. The pipeline this talk is about (roughly 60,000 lines of R in a single monolithic script, by design so researchers without a software-engineering background can read it end to end) processes those exports into reproducible analytic datasets that downstream researchers can compare across cities.
Why it&apos;s hard. Citizens draw self-intersecting polygons, polygons with antenna spikes, polygons with stray holes, polygons where their home sits just outside the boundary. Five cities use four CRSes, three routing engines, and five languages of free text. Re-running anything from scratch costs hours, so caching is non-negotiable, which means cache invalidation matters too.
Three defensive patterns walked through in the talk:

A geometry-repair pipeline for freehand citizen drawings. Around 5,000 respondents drew their perceived neighborhood freehand on a Maptionnaire map. The result is a catalogue of topology defects: self-intersections, antenna spikes, donut holes, off-home centers, even occasional polygons where the home falls a kilometer outside the drawn boundary. We built a 14-stage repair pipeline (validity repair, buffer(0), antenna-spike removal, morphological open and close, compactness check, home-inside verification with 200 m tolerance) that outputs both the cleaned geometry and a status code downstream code can branch on. The home-inside verification is also our last line of defense against a cache mistake: an early polygon-cache key used a checksum that collided in bulk on real Maptionnaire WKT, and 150 of 936 valid neighborhoods ended up attached to the wrong respondent, with home-to-polygon distances up to 59 km. Fix: key the cache by Respondent ID, and on every cache hit re-verify that the cached geometry still contains this row&apos;s home. Costs nothing, catches everything.
A dual-mode activity-space classifier built on routed distances. Around 18,000 home-to-activity trips need routing across five city networks. We dispatch through r5r, OSRM, or OpenRouteService depending on configuration. The output has a unified schema, so downstream code does not care which engine was used. The classifier then runs each respondent&apos;s activity space through single-linkage clustering at a 15-minute isochrone threshold (1.2 km for walking, 3.1 km for cycling), separately per mode, producing Monocentric, Bicentric, and Polycentric labels. When the routing API is flaky (which it is, when you hit a public ORS endpoint at city scale), the cluster-cohesion test falls back to a Euclidean approximation: defensible enough that the run finishes.
An audit-logged AI workflow that is defensible in peer review. Free-text &quot;Other&quot; answers arrive in five languages (Dutch, German, Turkish, Portuguese, English). We use Mistral to reclassify them against the survey&apos;s coded categories. The pattern matters more than the model: every reclassification event is logged to a per-context CSV that preserves the original free-text alongside the reclassified code and a confidence score, the cache verifies the stored text on every hit so a key collision cannot return the wrong category, and the request layer rotates keys on 429 with Retry-After. Every AI decision is traceable to its input. The same pattern transfers to open-weight local models (Llama, local Mistral 7B), the obvious next step toward a fully-open pipeline.

What you&apos;ll take away. Concrete patterns, all FOSS, for building geospatial R that survives contact with real survey data. A worked example of where the rough edges of sf, GeoPackage, and the R routing ecosystem actually bite. And a frame for using AI in research code without compromising reproducibility.
This talk is not a research-results talk. The cross-city accessibility findings live in a separate paper. The pipeline is the artefact under discussion. The goal is for the audience to leave with patterns they can apply to their own geo-R code.
Prerequisites. Intermediate R users who have used sf for anything non-trivial. Familiarity with PPGIS or accessibility research is helpful but not required. Nothing to install: this is a talk, not a workshop.</description>

The promise of integrating AI in Geo is big, but how to navigate the rapidly developing AI world? How to filter AI nonsense from actual use value? And most importantly: how to do it open source?

In this talk, we provide a working example of an open source web-GIS that uses an LLM to query spatial data and display the results. We discuss challenges related to: LLM hallucination, consistency of results, generating valid SQL queries and guard-railing the LLM.

Over a decade ago, researchers started to investigate how to monitor river flows with camera video footage. This offers the promise that river monitoring may become low-cost, and carried out with off the shelf IoT materials. This led to first successful applications of river flow monitoring from videos. The workflow typically consists of acquiring a video from an oblique angle, pre-process to bring forward moving tracers such as advecting ripples, bubbles or eddies, orthorectification (i.e. reprojecting pixels to meter distance, some form of tracing patterns or particles from frame to frame and from location to location, and combining velocities with a surveyed cross-section to yield river flow in cubic metre per second. Several free and sometimes open-source existing applications allow users to load videos in a user interface, and perform the steps interactively. However, operational, real-time, automated flow observations with camera videos so far was only feasible with proprietary hardware and software solutions, compromising the promise of affordability and local maintenance of services.

With OpenRiverCam, for the first time any user can acquire materials for a station, setup an automated workflow using the on-site OpenRiverCam Operating System (_ORC-OS_), and even collect data centrally on a central server-side REST API called LiveOpenRiverCam (_LiveORC_). Not only does the ecosystem provide software, it also provides extensive doumentation that guides a user how to establish a field hardware setup, and how to install and survey the station. The documentation forms an integral part of the ecosystem, as it allows a user truly become independent of the developers. In this presentation, I will demonstrate the current capabilities of the software, the underlying methods, the on-site application _ORC-OS_ and how it runs on a standard Raspberry Pi 5, and the REST API _LiveORC_. I will also demonstrate how first users are able to establish services in their own local context with locally fit business propositions with examples from Zambia, California &#8211; US, and Indonesia.

Off-the-shelf network-analysis tools force a choice: bend your research question to fit the software, or wrestle with heavyweight server stacks. Agentic AI changes that calculus. Instead of adapting to someone else&apos;s schema, I could specify the exact data models, request formats, and features my work demanded&#160; and have a working tool emerge in days rather than months.

The result is NetWeevil: an open-source engine for reproducible network analysis that runs entirely on your own machine, directly against OpenStreetMap and GTFS data. From a single OSM extract it builds the street network, compiles routing profiles (walk, bike, car), and answers routing, matrix, service-area, and accessibility queries in milliseconds. A GTFS module adds multimodal transit access, and a companion QGIS plugin pulls routes, isochrones, and accessibility surfaces straight onto the canvas. Not the first to do this, but first to do like I want it to based on tens of ideas and questions about network analysis over the years.

This talk is two stories in one: how agentic AI reshapes who gets to build geospatial software and how fast, and a tour of the tool that process produced. Attendees will leave with a concrete picture of AI-assisted prototyping and a practical, private engine for multimodal network analysis on their own data.

Keeping (OGC) Geospatial Web Services up-and-running is best accommodated by continuous monitoring: not only downtime needs to be guarded,
but also whether the services are functioning correctly and do not suffer from performance and/or other Quality of Service (QoS) issues.
GeoHealthCheck (GHC) is an Open Source Python application for monitoring uptime and availability of OGC Web Services.
In this talk we will explain GHC basics, how it works, how you can use and even extend GHC (plugins).
