EarthLinks - Flexible linking of Earth observation data with social indicators
26.03.2026 , Posterausstellung

EarthLinks develops an open-source R package called gxc to link time- and space-sensitive social science datasets with data from Earth observation programs. For easy and cross-platform usage, this package is accompanied by an R Shiny App. EarthLinks supports inter- and transdisciplinary research which is often made difficult because of technical, disciplinary, and organizational barriers.

For many researchers in the social sciences, Earth observation (EO) data represents a black box. EarthLinks aims to close the gap by developing an open-source R package called gxc to link time- and space-sensitive social science datasets with data from Earth observation programs. For easy and cross-platform usage, this package is accompanied by an R Shiny App. EarthLinks supports inter- and transdisciplinary research which is often made difficult because of technical, disciplinary, and organizational barriers. The project recognizes research data management (RDM) workflows based on FAIR data and Open Science principles. There are several major research topics which benefit from the integration of EO data:
1. Environmental social sciences,
2. Conflict and peace research,
3. Political attitudes and behavior,
4. Policy studies,
5. Economic development and inequality,
6. And Public health.

I am a postdoctoral researcher at GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences. I am focussing on data-driven interdisciplinary research between the social and Earth system sciences. I am currently working on several projects about societal resilience and preparedness towards extreme weather events and other natural hazards.
