User impersonation is a powerful capability within Open OnDemand that enables designated users—such as administrators, support staff, or service accounts—to act on behalf of other users to troubleshoot issues, validate configurations, and streamline workflows. As HPC centers grow more complex and support demands increase, a flexible and secure impersonation model becomes essential.
This talk presents the design, implementation, and configuration of enhanced user impersonation features in Open OnDemand. We will explore both frontend and backend changes that allow multiple classes of users to impersonate others while maintaining strict security and auditability requirements. Topics include updates to authentication and mapping layers, interface and workflow adjustments in the OnDemand dashboard, and best practices for safely exposing impersonation capabilities in multi-user environments. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how to enable, manage, and customize impersonation to suit their site’s policies and operational needs.
