Predicting climate for a season or a decade ahead remains in many cases a formidable challenge owing to our limited scientific understanding and technical capabilities very much alike. In this time-travel talk, I will explore (failed) past predictions to learn for future forecasts. I will present recent methodological progress in predicting climate for the next season ahead using prediction systems based on the Max-Planck-Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM), focusing seasonal predictions for European climate — including a sneak preview of the climate predictions for the coming winter.
