Session
Background and aims:
The use of theory in qualitative research can be challenging for those who have not received training in this or who are new to publishing this type of research. However, the use of theory is important for authors in targeting higher impact journals and in connecting their research with other bodies of scholarship.
Description of workshop:
This symposium aims to demystify the topic and help attendees gain confidence in using theory in their own work and in reading and applying theory-based qualitative research papers.
Methods and format:
Attendees will be presented with an overview covering definitions of and rationales for using theory in qualitative research. Three examples of the use of theory in qualitative papers will be presented. The three examples chosen will lead the delegates through a series of approaches to using theory.
Delegates will have the opportunity to raise their own issues and questions for discussion.
This symposium is designed for early/mid career researchers (including Masters and PhD students) who are new to using theory in qualitative research.
