JuliaCon 2026

Five years of bringing Julia into industry
2026-08-14 , Room 5

Over five years of professional projects, I introduced and supported Julia across a variety of different projects. I have maintained closed-ecosystem packages, and taught a variety of colleagues. I’ll share what worked, what didn’t, and what surprised me most about adopting and promoting Julia in a professional setting.

In my my company I have worked on a variety of different projects for several different customers, usually with a strong mathematical flavor to them. My first Julia experience was a challenging one. It seemed like a straightforward assignment but it quickly escalated beyond what I expected. I ended up maintaining several Julia packages in a closed off ecosystem with a variety of users and supporting the rollout of Julia within the customer way of working. After this project ended I tried to get a few other Julia projects of the ground but it has been challenging so far to say the least. Never the less there has been an interest in learning Julia by some of my colleagues and it inspired my to setup a Julia course within my company.

I want to share with you my experiences so far in using Julia in a professional setting and how I have tried to increase Julia adoption within my company. I have also gathered some opinions from my a number of different colleagues, which have not always had a positive experience with Julia.
I hope to inspire and educate others on what to do and what not to do when introducing Julia in their working environment.

Over the last five years I’ve used Julia across several industrial projects, most with a strong mathematical focus. My first encounter was a modest assignment that quickly grew into maintaining multiple internal packages, supporting diverse users, and helping a customer adapt Julia to their existing workflows. Since then, I’ve tried to start new Julia projects and encourage wider adoption within my company — a journey filled with both progress and setbacks.

Together with a colleague I even started an internal Julia course at my company. Through that experience, and from countless informal discussions, I’ve gathered many perspectives on Julia.
In this talk I’ll share the lessons that emerged about what helps Julia take root and where teams often struggle. My hope is to provide an honest and practical picture of how Julia is received in a professional setting and to offer ideas for others trying to grow Julia adoption in their own settings.

I am interested in anything mathematics and physics both theoretical and computational.
Currently I work as a consultant in the "Mathware" department of Sioux Technologies in the Netherlands.
Previously I was a theoretical physicist studying black holes and string theory inspired black hole alternatives.
