The economy of hate: How our marketing budgets fund hate and conspiracy (and how to fix it)

How are conspiracy theories and propaganda growing so big, so fast? Why are local news outlets going under? The answer lies in the $89.5 billion ad industry. In this session, we’ll look at how disinformation incubates in the internet’s “long tail” before it makes its way into mainstream media. We’ll look at how irresponsible programmatic advertising is incentivizing the growth of disinformation and spreading hate around the world. Learn how it works, and how to put a stick in the spokes of this trainwreck industry.

I'm sorry, this question is unclear. Work that we do or work that participants can do? At Check My Ads, we run trainings and seminars about how to stop funding hate speech and disinformation.

Participants can go and check their ads after this session, and ring the bell when they inevitably find that they are funding outlets they don't want to be funding.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

If there are few participants in this session, I will ask them about their experience within advertising first, and talk to them about what they are dealing with. If there are fewer than 3 participants I will not present.

If there are 7 or more participants, I will go forward with a prepared presentation and a Q&A period.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

This session teaches executives, team leaders, and marketers how to consider their role as advertisers within the media ecosystem. It will include stories, humour, and some shocking statistics before offering actionable next steps for checking your ads.
