Web Sheets: making the most from the other side of your web page

Publishing used to require a large capital investment in printing machinery. Today, it's easier than ever to distribute your message, however it's increasingly likely that just a few tech platforms will benefit economically from your message.

In this workshop, we introduce the Web Sheet: a concept to let us talk about the other side of web pages–their monetization.

Participants will view, analyze and annotate a selection of web pages, collectively guessing how these pages make money for their creators. Together we’ll compare these guesses with actual numbers and discuss what we might do to change the Web Sheet to balance in favor of creators rather than the platforms.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The overall structure should be the same regardless of the number of participants. I'll have a set of shared documents that participants can click through to vote for how they think a web page is monetized. We may have slightly more or less conversation on each item as the number of participants change with the idea to hear as many points of view as possible. With that said there should be a fairly consistent amount of time per page.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

This is the start of a narrative arc surrounding my Mozilla Fellowship in alternative payment systems. The feedback from this session will be folded into that ongoing work. Hopefully we can continue these conversations via social media channels as well.
