DIY-AI: Exploring Creative Applications of Machine Learning with Runway

This workshop presents a hands-on demonstration of Runway: a next generation web application for artists and creatives to engage with machine learning. By lowering the barrier to entry to access the latest AI research, Runway enables folks to use these technologies in their creative processes, and create new works and methods of creating that weren't previously possible. We believe that enabling cultural producers to participate in the current AI revolution is one of the best ways to democratize the use of these technologies, and help develop them in a human-centered way.

In this workshop, we'll demonstrate the process of training and using generative models with Runway and encourage workshop participants to follow along at home. This workshop will be inclusive to all skill levels and creative interests.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

We see our workshop as successful if the attendees leave the event empowered to 1) make new creative work or 2) incorporate what they've learned during the event in an educational or demonstrative capacity in the future, so that others can do the same. A secondary goal of our workshop is to foster community among the participants, which leads to collaboration and submission to the culminating web art show hosted after the event (described more below).

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

We're interested in hosting a small web exhibition of the work created by the participants of the workshop. During the workshop, we plan to announce the event, and set the submission deadline for a month after MozFest. Workshop attendees who are interested in participating will be able to continue working on the projects they started during the workshop, or use the skills they learned there to make a creative work using Runway anytime before the deadline. We'll then make their work available in an online collection with information contextualizing the event and showcasing the participants.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

Our workshop format is flexible to any number of participants. A smaller group will allow us to dive deeper into topics of the participants suggestion, and have a more intimate and collaborative session. With a larger group, we'll be able to get the tool into more people's hands, and have a larger pool of participants to include in the online gallery we'll publish following the workshop. We'll adapt our presentation and workshop leadership style to fit the group size.
