We’ve built an API for Wellcome Collection’s images, exposing millions of pictures from our medical museum and library.
We’ve got pictures of skeletons and syringes and strychnine and simulations. All of them are as openly licensed as possible, free for you to remix and reuse.
In this session we’re going to be creating and collaborating around the theme of colour.
Anything’s possible - Maybe you want to create a collage of red onions from the 1400s, or visualise the colour palettes of historical toothpaste adverts, or just collect inspiration for your next face tattoo. Whatever it is, we want to see all the weird and wonderful stuff you can create!
We’ll be on hand to help you make the most of the API, and we’ll give you time at the end of the session to show off what you’ve made!
In case we have loads of participants:
- We'll be bouncing between participants to look at any problems they're encountering, but while they wait for us:
- We'll have a few pre-baked ideas and code examples on hand for people to refer to
- All of our APIs and instructions for working with our data are documented at developers.wellcomecollection.org
- Participants who aren't up for writing code can still explore the API through a browser, or use the collections website just like our typical researchers!
In case we have a small number of participants:
- We'll be able to pair more closely on people's ideas, while still having all of the resources mentioned above!
We're hoping that starting a quick, fun project while getting to grips with our API will encourage people to keep working with it, and keep discovering fun weird stuff in our collection!
On our side, the immediate sticking points we observe during the session will be a valuable indicator of how we should develop the API
