PREreview Open Reviewers is a peer review mentoring program adapted from Mozilla Open Leaders aimed at training the next generation of racially diverse and socially-conscious peer reviewers. During the session we will share what motivated us to develop this program and what we have learned so far. We will also discuss openly our goals and dreams for what comes after the first pilot, gathering feedback from the participants. We will use an interactive Miro board and solicit questions, comments, and experience sharing throughout the session. Join us!
We will invite participants to join our Slack channel and share their contact information to receive our newsletter to stay connected. Furthermore, we will share our GitHub account where all our materials for the Open Reviewers pilot will be shared under CC-BY license, and invite folks to contribute with ideas on how to scale, copy, adapt, re-purpose our resources to other communities' needs.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:If the number of participants is above 10, we will plan to use breakout rooms (if possible through the MozFest organization tools or using our Zoom room) to create smaller group discussions facilitated by one member of our team (at least three members of our team will participate). Alternatively, we will use the white-board tool, collaborative writing notes in a template document we will have prepared for the session, and other silent-writing tools to stimulate non-verbal feedback in addition to allowing for time for participants to speak.
If the number of participant is low, we will create opportunities for direct feedback at every point of our discussion, probing participants to share their experiences and ideas in more depth.
What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:We hope to get feedback from the audience on how to best scale Open Reviewers to impact research communities across the globe, leveraging partnerships with like-minded organizations that are already working at dismantling Western-centric models and processing around research production, evaluation, and dissemination.
