As the City Whispers

How might everyday things care for each other and their surroundings?

Even before being connected to the internet, things are connected between each other and with their surroundings. Starting from a pre-created neighborhood map and the many living and non-living things that inhabit it, the visitors will be invited to imagine the exchanges between these different entities as they try and care for their community and their surroundings. How are these living and non-living agents collaborating with each other? What do they have to say?

Through the perspective of non-human actors, we will explore how these connected things can work together, with their surroundings and with the community to create more sustainable spaces. Each visitor will get to embody one of these entities and communicate with others to imagine how to better care for their immediate surroundings.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

This format is part of a broader effort we have both been taking part in to encourage new ways of imagining the city, and raising its citizens' expectations towards it. We hope to continue running versions of these sessions with local organizations and their chapters like Extinction Rebellion Rotterdam, the Art and Tech Society in Eindhoven, and the Future Based community.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

As mentioned above, we've been running these sessions as office hours which allows for 1-10 people to partake in the activity, without affecting the success and smooth-running of the format.

This requires participants to choose a time in advance, although we are more than happy to allow for people to drop by as they wish. In the last session we hosted with a similar format we created a bespoke visual collaboration template divided in specific stages that could be used to self-guide participants.

For larger groups, above fifteen, we could imagine splitting into two groups and both Pedro and I could run our own sessions. Or once again, we can test a self-run, tutorial-based format.
