Mozilla Festival 2021 (March 8th – 19th, 2021)

World Landmarks with SketchUp

Participants in this workshop will be guided through the basic commands of SketchUp, a 3D design tool that is free and accessible over the internet. Using screen sharing, they’ll be taught how to create 3D shapes, which can be interconnected to form a building, before learning how to decorate these buildings. Ultimately, the goal of the workshop is for participants to be able to create their own 3D scale models of world landmarks, utilising the skills learnt previously. After the workshop, participants will be able to continue using what they have learnt, as they can use SketchUp easily at home.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

As the workshop will be virtual, varying participant numbers shouldn’t change the layout too much. I will be screen-sharing to demonstrate tools, and participants can ask questions using a chat or microphone function. If participants need extended help, I can talk them through using my own computer. A small number of participants would, however, allow time at the end for participants to share what they've created, although this would be difficult with a large number.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

SketchUp’s basic software can be accessed online with a free account, meaning participants can use and develop what they’ve learnt after the workshop. Rendering extensions and other tools mean they can further learn, and I will give some recommendations on tools I like to use in conjunction with SketchUp.

Hi! I'm a secondary school student from Lancashire, with experience working with SketchUp and rendering tools. I've attended MozFest as a facilitator every year since I was 11. :)
