Mozilla Festival 2021 (March 8th – 19th, 2021)

wildcrafting: a collaborative composition of the botanical worlds that make mozfest

this year, digitally-mediated connections have become not just important, but critical to our social well-being. but reliance on tech for human connection can often diminish the role of physical environments, especially with the natural world. a palpable connection to nature is a critical component of ensuring a sustainable future, and machine learning tools can enhance our ability to make sense of the organisms around us.
we invite participants to connect with the nature surrounding them, and to share it with the greater mozfest community. participants "arrive" by going outdoors in their respective physical locations, capturing it with their digital devices, identifying it with iNaturalist, and contributing to an immersive collage co-created with participants around the world.

This art and media piece is hosted on a third-party website.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

our session results in an artifact, or 3D piece, aims to record and pay tribute to the diversity in plants and people who crossed paths at mozfest. through contribution to the piece, the possibility is opened for participants to make connections to the surrounding organisms.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

In building the code for this work, we aim to develop a set of practices and learnings for digital-eco place making. We are intent on making code open source and available for others to remix and make their own artifacts.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

Our intent is for the display to build slowly over the course of the entire festival, so that the experience grows richer over time. Early participants will be invited back later to experience the completed display.

Our primary limitation will be server constraints. We plan to throttle server requests and image sizes to help ensure the experience will have as little interruption as possible.
