AI is disrupting global society. Steamlabs has developed workshops to be taught across Canada to educate vulnerable youth on AI, and prepare them to use AI as their assistant to solve their personal challenges and improve their world. By discussing social implications and problems around data security, inequity and bias, we prepare them to advocate for an equitable world where AI is used to support and enhance us rather than manipulate, oppress and replace us.
We’ll share open-source code with topics that connect to everyday life and to UN sustainable development goals. Learn about neural networks by building one for your bakery to generate fusion cuisine pie recipes. Learn about data science by building a power grid fossil fuel intensity forecast to make power usage decisions throughout your day. Learn about natural language processing by making a movie character mashup chatbot on Discord to argue with your friends.
We are deeply committed to serving the needs of the organizations that will deliver our programs. At previous MozFests, we have connected with many people around the globe to share our work with and to support. We’re looking forward to doing that again!
We’re also hoping to hear about new ways that others are affecting the AI ethics and policy development area and collaborating with them.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:The hands-on portions of the session will be able to scale to any number of participants. Our usual group size is a classroom of 10 to 30, but we can scale to any number. Even thousands would be no problem, as our web based platforms are meant to scale.
What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:Our goal is to share our work, and connect with others working to engage the general public in discussions and decisions on ethical, trustworthy AI.
This is a critical time in the development of AI, government policies and company best practices are being developed. Business knows this. Deloitte: “Public policy is a key driver for achieving AI prosperity because it sets the rules of the game and the conditions for success. Our policy frameworks were drafted with good intentions, but many date back decades―to a time before digitization was widespread.”
As a community, we need to make sure that these policies are progressive, not entrenching existing power structures.
With our experience in technology innovation and education, Steamlabs is suited to develop AI education as the lever that we’re pulling. An educated public is a powerful ally.
We want to hear from others on what levers they are pulling!
