Building a security practitioner’s toolkit for social revolts

In the past years we’ve witnessed revolutions across the world. From Ecuador to Chile, through Colombia and Perú, people have taken to streets and mobilized against structural violence, inequality, corruption, and failed governments.

In this workshop, Latin American information security activists share lessons learned in the streets and on devices for supporting social justice movements, and activists from other latitudes help build collective knowledge. After speakers share experiences, participants respond to the question: What should security practitioners have in a toolkit when revolutions come?

Participants fill in a “Kanban”-like board with their resource wishlist for a security practitioner’s toolkit for social revolts. These resources may already exist or need to be developed. The list may include documentation of processes/tools, access to technical infrastructure, connections to practitioners from other disciplines, medicinal herbs, or psychosocial support.

After ideation, participants vote on the top resources needed for the toolkit.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The presenters/organisers of this session are comfortable facilitating both large groups and smaller ones. Additionally, the content, learnings and direction itself is informed by a group of information/organisational security practitioners, meaning that it draws from ideas that are already relevant to these communities. In terms of the structure of the session itself, synchronous participation will be done through a resources mapping activity, which can be accomplished with any number of participants that join the session, as they will be writing and voting within the platform itself. Additional participation can be shaped by the interests and size of the group on the day of the event, and we’re excited to co-create a session that works for all its participants.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

This event is embedded within the practices of the Latin American information security activists who will present, and within the work of The Engine Room. It will build on existing research, community building and resource-creation. It does not exist in a vacuum. To that end, we will also build out of it – we will share learnings with session participants and with social justice activists more broadly through a blog post, a toolkit, and through collaboration within the existing orgsec.community and regional communities in Latin America.
