Mozilla Festival 2021 (March 8th – 19th, 2021)

Discovering Culture through Visual Identity and Sound Design

This participatory experience will be introduced by a virtual audiovisual experience that will show how to integrate sound and visuals to express one's identity and heritage. Then, participants will be asked to identify the elements that had defined their identity and that could be found in their area. Using free software and the tools already integrated in the computers, we will rework this element to create audiovisual narratives.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

In this session, each participant will start brainstorming and designing an audiovisual piece based on a cultural element that will reflect their identity and heritage. After this session, the participants will have the opportunity to finish this piece of art. Ideally, we could put together all of this pieces to reflect a variety of cultures and voices.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

1-3 participants: I will guide participants and counseling them in creating their audiovisual piece individually.
3-10 participants: Participants will expose their proposal and I will give general advice and a common work flow.
10-20 participants: Participants will expose their proposal shortly and will work in their audiovisual piece while they receive feedback.
20-30 participants: Participants will answer questions to expose their proposal and will follow specific guidelines to create it.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

The main goal of this session is to provide artistic and technical tools to express one's culture, heritage and surroundings. Multiple examples will be shown where cultural identity and neighbourhoods were used to create experimental videos and sounds. We encouraged participants to install the following free softwares: Audacity and OpenShot Video Editor. They can also use any other video editor and sound software.
