Feeding 2 Birds with One Scone: How to Achieve Diversity & Sustainability for Open Source Software Teams

In this session, experts from at-risk communities and open source software (OSS) teams who maintain security and privacy tools will share their experiences of working together for 3-6 months through Internews’ BASICS program. Experts from at-risk communities were hired to help meet key sustainability needs of widely used OSS security & privacy tools. Our speaker panel is made up of both experts from at-risk communities and maintainers of OSS privacy & security tools:
Natalie Cadranel (maintainter of Save by OpenArchive)
Marek Marczykowski-Górecki (maintainer of Qubes OS)
Viktoriia Savchuk (expert consultant working with Save, Tella, and Tahoe-LAFS)
Eric Wamugu (expert consultant working with Qubes OS)
Moderator: Gina Helfrich (Program Officer, Internews)

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

We already have a RiseUp mailing list for the tool teams and expert consultants who are participating in the BASICS program -- it would be straightforward to open that email list up to anyone who is interested who participates in our MozFest session.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

If there are 3 participants, they will each get a super in-depth and personalized discussion with our speakers. If there are 30, we will split them evenly so that there are approximately 4 small groups, each of whom is conversing with one of our speakers -- and then we will rotate so that everyone can speak with at least one open source maintainer and one expert from an at-risk community.

Dr. Gina Helfrich is Program Officer for Global Technology at Internews, where she works to make technology better serve the needs of vulnerable and marginalized people.

Open Source Consultant for the BASICS program at Internews working with OSS teams at Qubes-OS and the Open Archive.
