The Ecology of AI Repair

Who is involved in repairing AI-based tools? What kinds of expertise are required to fix them? And who is forgotten in the conversation?

Picking an AI failure story of your choice or from a list of scenarios, participants will embody different roles in an AI repair team and imagine what they need to do to help solve a broad range of issues they can uncover trying to fix an AI failure. As participants begin to cluster around certain issues, we will be able to visualize the ecology of AI repair on this Miro board: https://miro.com/app/board/o9J_lRRny8A=/. Individual participants are free to create their own repair narrative with digital sticky notes! By shifting our attention from design to repair, this workshop is designed to have participants walk away with new ways of explaining why an AI fails to do what it is intended to do, and the first step to fixing it.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

Depending on size, we will divide our group into several Zoom breakout rooms. Everyone will join the mapping activity using the same Mural link. On the Miro board, you will be able to see each group's map. To guide discussion in each breakout room, teams will be given a range of issue related to a few AI failure stories to think about fixing.

You are encouraged to ask questions to clarify your understanding, but refrain from judgement. If you wish to create your own mural, we create a blank Miro frame that you can copy and fill in. Brian can show you how to create sticky notes, add text and add connection lines.

We will rejoin the main room after the activity, 15 mins before the end of the workshop, at which point any of you is welcome to share their mural and their learnings.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

To cultivate trust in AI and our ability to repair it, we encourage participants to keep the conversation going by sharing a screenshot of their Miro frame using the Instagram hashtag #AIrepair. You may also (re-)tweet the link to the Miro board: https://miro.com/app/board/o9J_lRRny8A=/ using the hashtags #AIWellnessSpace #MozFest2021
