Creating Connected Applications

In today’s remote-first environment, web-based communication tools like zoom, discord, and discourse have become integral to our daily lives both personally and professionally. We aim to provide participants the opportunity to move from being users of such tools to being creators of them.

Here is what we will cover:
* What tools are available today for us to create our own web-based communication technologies?
* How can we conceptualize, design and develop multi-person experiences on the web?
* A focus on websockets, socket.io, and the glitch platform with everyone leaving with their own working multi-person web-based application.

This session is open to all levels. Some programming experience is recommended but not required. This will be a hands-on workshop, participants are encouraged to join via laptop or desktop as opposed to a mobile device. Also, participants will be expected to create an account in Glitch.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:
  • We will have 2 facilitators, so in case of a very large group, we can split into smaller groups.
  • The content and instructions will be written and organized in such a way that there will be a sequence of steps that everyone can follow.
  • All of the technical aspects will be pre-built and shareable online so that work can be done either in sync during the workshop or asynchronous at people’s own time and pace.
We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:
  • Share resources with participants for further learning
  • Provide resources to online communities that work on open source and coding projects.
What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

Given the increased reliance on communication technology, we hope this workshop will provide participants with a better understanding of the technologies they are using on a daily basis. More importantly, we want to empower them to be active creators, not only passive participants who use what is popular or “assigned” to them. Workshop participants will also have a working real-time application that they can actively design and develop on their own.
