Mozilla Festival 2021 (March 8th – 19th, 2021)

The Roots of Algorithmic Injustice: Intersections of Colonialism, Systems of Oppression, and Technology

In this session we'll discuss how technology is a tool that exists within a social and political context that it cannot be meaningfully separated from — specifically colonization and systems of oppression. We'll dive deeper into these issues in the form of a collective education session on what colonization is and how it manifests in our day-to-day lives. Then we'll highlight the intersections of colonialism and capitalism and how we can take a radical approach to dismantle these systems within our own hearts, minds, and work.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:
  • To raise awareness within the digital rights sphere on decolonization and anti-racist action being core to our work, as opposed to being a separate issue.
  • To highlight the intersections of colonialism and capitalism as it manifests in our day-to-day lives, and how we can take a radical approach to dismantle these systems within our own hearts, minds, and work.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

I'll be presenting a talk on colonization, capitalism, and technology. It will be followed by a community discussion.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

The goal of this session is to inspire everyone to reflect deeply on oppressive systems that have been internalized within themselves and in their work.
