Demystifying the use of AI in Africa

AI for many Africans is an extremely futuristic concept, one that we assume would be like what we see in Movies or come years after we get used to driving Teslas. As the Lawyers Hub, we are committed to defending and building online communities however, we recognize how important it is for users to understand our work. therefore, this session will be interactive and utilize design thinking to ask participants what AI means to them. Thereafter we shall play a Maximum of 3, Three-minute lightning talks and one illustrative video from industry practitioners talking about AI. we shall then interact with participants to see if this changes their perspectives and How.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The session is designed to handle diverse participation. where the participants are few, we shall get individual responses to our questions, where they are many, we shall utilize break-out rooms and allow group discussions. we shall then record group answers to our questions.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

The Lawyers Hub has been working on AI governance in Africa. In 2020, we held the inaugural Africa Law Tech Festival where we held 3 policy discussion sessions on AI, elections, and data governance. In collaboration with I4Policy, we also developed a policy brief on AI and data governance in Africa. We believe we shall continue work from this session in the second edition of the Africa Law Tech festival. we shall also further it in our digital policy and advocacy throughout the year.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

The goal of this session is to increase awareness of the meaning and use of AI in Africa. It is our belief that getting participants to understand this will curate interest in the need for the development of more trustworthy technologies.
