We discuss trends in global education and how they affect responsible AI pedagogy, taking as a case study our own experience providing AI education to a variety of audiences in the Philippines. We also share principles that we have found that improve the efficacy and inclusion of our education efforts in the context of the Philippines, as a starting point for discussion about contextualizing, adapting, and enriching pedagogy for responsible AI in communities outside of major tech hubs.
The world of AI is unfortunately overwhelmingly developed and discussed in the high-income areas of high-income countries. However, many of the communities that most stand to benefit from AI education and inclusion in the AI community live outside of these areas. We want to focus on how to adapt pedagogical practices for responsible AI education to areas that are traditionally not AI hubs, particularly in the Global South.
In particular, we wish to support audience members to identify opportunities to more deeply integrate project-based learning, purpose-driven education, communal philosophies, applications of Agile principles, relevance to industry, the unique circumstances of AI workers outside of tech hubs, and adapting to the levels of educational capital bestowed by traditional institutions in low and middle-income contexts.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:Our session is flexible for any number of participants higher than 4, with an online lecture followed by breakout rooms and discussion. For best results, we hope to combine an audience of educators and AI scientists, as well as policy-makers, journalists, community activists, and industry representatives. A mix of participants from different regions of the world will increase the richness of the session’s learnings for all. We will provide discussion questions and collaboration documents for the breakout sessions.
We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:We hope to identify concrete next steps for participants to 1) improve their existing educational practices, 2) identify ways to supplement the educational practices of current actors in their regions, or 3) build partnerships between relevant actors that can complement each other’s educational contributions. Examples of this can include uplifting ideas for project-based sprint courses, mapping potential collaborators and networks, and replicating or adapting successful best practices from one region to another.
