Digital Care and activist infrastructures in Brazil: from servers to technical assistance

Recent events in the Brazilian political and social scene have highlighted the need to work on issues of digital care by social movements, activist groups and NGOs operating in the national context. This work, however, faces several challenges, such as:

  • The scarcity of technical staff working at the intersection of technology and human rights within organizations;

  • The scarcity of activist groups working to support organizations in relation to server administration and the use of online and secure collaborative work tools;

  • The lack of a structured network of people who can provide technical assistance services to human rights organizations;

  • The lack of specific funding for infrastructure development and technical assistance.

This session aims to discuss these challenges and think about possibilities for action in the Brazilian context, and will have the participation of digital care activists, members of human rights organizations and philanthropic funds and foundations.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

My expectation regarding the session is to be able to extract from the discussion strategies that can be put into practice to address the challenges mentioned. In this sense, I believe it is possible to encourage the creation of working groups among the participating people; initiate work to raise awareness of philanthropic foundations for the need to finance activist infrastructures in Brazil; and start work on creating a technical assistance network for human rights organizations.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The session will be held in Portuguese, with no restriction on the number of participants. The idea is that it will be a conversation circle between the people/organizations invited and MozFest attendees. If we have a very large audience, it will be necessary to negotiate the speaking time and the number of questions and collaborations.
