Visible mending of clothes is an antidote to fast fashion and lack of care for sustainability, and a protest against the culture of treating clothes as disposable and discardable. Visible mending movement is inspired by Sashiko, a technique of functional embroidery that came from Japan during the Edo era and stemmed from a need to repair and reinforce worn pieces with embroidery and patches.
What if we took this concept of repairing beloved items and applied it to our favourite electronics? What are some obstacles standing in a way of easily repairing our electronics and how can Right to Repair help address some of the issues? What kinds of programs already exist, and what are their disadvantages? What kind of change do we need to see from governments, manufacturers and repair shops to help address this?
The goals of this session is to raise awareness about varying ways that participants can take both short-term actions - by using visible mending in their clothes to protest the culture of fast fashion - and long-term actions - such as promoting and advocating for Right to Repair - to be more sustainable.
We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:If there is enough interest, I will create a channel in MozFest slack where the participants can stay in touch and share useful resources and, potentially, collaborate on new projects.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:After the introduction, the participants will be broken up in small groups to discuss questions and collaborate on potential solutions and approaches to the problems presented in the session. At the end of the session each group will share the results with everyone else to circulate the knowledge. If there is only one person joining, we will have an in depth 1x1 conversation. If there are 30 participants, they will be broken down into groups of 4 or 5 people.
