Book club meeting: Reading First 2 Chapters of "Data Feminism" Book

Prior to attending the session, participants should read first two chapters of the book "Data Feminism": introduction and chapter 1 (both available as open access from MIT Press). There will be a summary presented at the beginning as a refresher. The book introduces a new way to take back power using data science with intersectional feminist principles applied. This approach can be used to expose injustice and advocate for data ethics and justice.

We will discuss how to apply the principle of examining power (from chapter 1), which looks at who is left out of data science, who is overlooked and who is pushed out, in the spaces we occupy and institutions we belong to, in order to start addressing inequity and injustice, while keeping in mind the concepts of privilege hazards and designing with and not for the community. We will also answer some book club questions.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

The goal of this session is to introduce the first Data Feminism principle - examining power by looking at who traditionally does data science and who is traditionally overlooked, and how this concept can be used to see the privilege embedded in data science practices.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

If there is enough interest, I will create a channel in MozFest slack where the participants can stay in touch and share useful resources and, potentially, collaborate on new projects. I am also interested in holding several book club meetings to read and discuss the remaining chapters of the book, and if there is enough momentum, reading more related books together.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

After the introduction, the participants will be broken up in small groups for discussions. At the end of the session each group will share the results with everyone else to circulate the knowledge. If there is only one person joining, we will have an in depth 1x1 conversation. If there are 30 participants, they will be broken down into groups of 4 or 5 people.
